My dog loves milk. Is it safe for them to drink, or should I avoid it?

In general I don't recommend to give yogurt to dogs because dairy tends to upset the stomach. If Simba seems to really like yogurt and it does not cause him to have diarrhea or an upset tummy, you can give him a small amount as a treat (no more than 1 teaspoon). Milk is very hard on a dog's digestive tract and may cause stomach upset or diarrhea. If Elma likes the taste of milk, a lactose-free variety or even "cat milk" from your local pet store (that is milk like but less hard on the stomach) may help entice Elma's eating without upsetting her stomach.

Most dogs do not tolerate cows milk. As they get older they do not have the proper enzymes to digest the lactose in the milk. I do know of some people who give their dogs milk and never have any problems. Baby girl does need a regimen of regular dog food though to ensure she is getting all the proper nutrients. If Babygirl commonly has an upset stomach the milk could actually be the problem. If she commonly has problems with her stomach, I would have your vet take a look at her to make sure there isn’t something else going on like intestinal parasites or a bacterial infection. Your vet will be able to talk to you in detail about her diet and the amount of milk she is receiving and whether taking off the milk will actually be more beneficial for her and her tummy. I typically do not recommend giving dogs straight milk, and lower sugar ice creams can have artificial sugars (such as xylitol) which are toxic to dogs. Regular ice cream or cheese can be fine in small amounts but it based on each individual animal. If you want to give your dog anything dairy as a small treat, only start with one thing in very small amounts to see how Brody tolerates it and ensure he doesn't develop any vomiting/diarrhea.

No, it's not harmful but she may have diarrhea because of it. If she does get diarrhea it is usually self-limiting (meaning it will resolve on it's own with no treatment). Hope this helps. Best wishes!

Hello, Scooby can have milk in his food as long as he tolerates it well. Some dogs may have hypersensitivity to milk proteins so if Scooby develops any diarrhea or vomiting with the milk than discontinue sprinkling milk on his food. Hope this helps and best of luck.

As dogs age and get weaned off of their mother's milk, they lose an enzyme that breaks down the protein in milk. Without this enzyme they can get diarrhea and other gastrointestinal upsets when they drink milk. Generally, we advise owners not to feed their dogs milk once they are over three months old. An allergy to the milk is also possible, but not very common and would similarly cause gastrointestinal problems. I hope that helps and all is well with Snowie.
