My dog drank milk. Is it harmful or will they get an upset stomach?

I am very sorry to hear that Sadie was given some milk by your 3 year old. I also have a 3 year old and a dog, it's a very interesting combination to be sure. The milk will most likely not cause anything more then some diarrhoea. Since you have only noticed a few episodes I would continue to monitor Sadie at home. Provide a bland diet of boiled boneless chicken breast and white rice and plenty of fresh water. Cooked skinless sweet potato can also be helpful for diarrhoea. If the episodes continue, if Sadie becomes depressed, passes large amounts of blood, vomits, or seems very uncomfortable take Sadie to see his vet. Because milk can have a high fat content, one potential complication of Sadie ingesting it, would be pancreatitis. If you notice the above signs it's possible Sadie has pancreatitis. Most dogs do not tolerate cows milk. As they get older they do not have the proper enzymes to digest the lactose in the milk. I do know of some people who give their dogs milk and never have any problems. Baby girl does need a regimen of regular dog food though to ensure she is getting all the proper nutrients. If Babygirl commonly has an upset stomach the milk could actually be the problem. If she commonly has problems with her stomach, I would have your vet take a look at her to make sure there isn’t something else going on like intestinal parasites or a bacterial infection. Your vet will be able to talk to you in detail about her diet and the amount of milk she is receiving and whether taking off the milk will actually be more beneficial for her and her tummy. It's not recommended to give dogs a lot of dairy products because it causes stomach upset in the form of vomiting and diarrhea. I can assure you that your grandfather is wrong, we are not liars. You may see vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy, or a loss of appetite from this. If you do see it, have Ollie seen by a vet.

As dogs age and get weaned off of their mother's milk, they lose an enzyme that breaks down the protein in milk. Without this enzyme they can get diarrhea and other gastrointestinal upsets when they drink milk. Generally, we advise owners not to feed their dogs milk once they are over three months old. Keep in mind though, once dogs are no longer puppies, most of them lose the ability to properly digest/breakdown dairy products so it is not really recommended that you give them milk. Milk is very hard on a dog's digestive tract and may cause stomach upset or diarrhea. If Elma likes the taste of milk, a lactose-free variety or even "cat milk" from your local pet store (that is milk like but less hard on the stomach) may help entice Elma's eating without upsetting her stomach.
