My dog has GI upset. Can Doxycycline and Metronidazole be combined?

Hello, I just answered your first question about Monty! I would recommend to finish the antibiotics first as they may cause him to have an upset stomach. That way its not so many things at once on Monty's little tummy. Make sure to give all the medications with food. It should be fine for you to give both the Doxy and Metro at the same time. Yes, it is safe to give those medications together - and both are necessary if she has a bacterial cause of her cough in addition to a giardia infection. Medication is dosed according to weight, so the amount of medication she is receiving should be appropriate for her size. Hope this helps!

Doxycycline can be given with metronidazole at the same time but it may be worth to double-check with your vet why Molly should be taking both. Most of the dogs that are recovering from parvo take an antibiotic, but administering two antibiotics at the same time is usually not necessary. Pet-Tinic contains vitamins, iron and cooper, it is safe to give it to Molly with the other medications.

This will depend on why your dog was prescribed the doxycycline and the metronidazole. If it was due to bad teeth or infection in the mouth , then there is no reason to reschedule. I suggest you ask your veterinarian if he would rather reschedule.

Both doxycycline and prednisone can cause vomiting and diarrhea. I am not sure of the dose that your dog is on but maybe your vet could adjust the dose so he has less gastrointestinal problems. Feeding the medication with a meal can sometimes help with the gastrointestinal side effects so make sure to give with food. Your vet could also prescribe an anti-vomiting medication, probiotic, and GI protectant which may help, too. At this point, If he is just going to vomit the medication than it doesn't make sense to give it. You should wait and see if your vet can prescribe additional medications to help with the vomiting and diarrhea. If the vomiting and diarrhea has stopped, you could try to give one medication at a time with food and see how he does.

Hello, if it was infectious, depending on the virus or parasite, you can get an incubation period which may delay the onset of clinical signs. Additionally, the events may be unrelated. That is, Pepper could be having its own cause for the diarrhea. In terms of the metronidazole, Bella is safe to continue to receive it if your veterinarian deems so necessary. You could use a bland diet (plain white rice, boiled skinless and boneless chicken, and low fat cottage cheese) for 3-5 days to see if this helps their clinical signs resolve.
