My dog has diarrhea, white specks, and is scooting. Is it parasites?

If the white specks in his poo look like grains of rice or sesame seeds then it is likely your dog has tape worm. ask your vet to treat your puppy for the parasites he diagnosed via a fecal sample (if he has not done a fecal sample, take some fresh poop to your vet for a fecal exam). You may also want to start with flea prevention as tape worm is transmitted by fleas.

Based on what you are describing I would be concerned that Coco may be having an issue with his anal glands. They may be impacted, infected, or need to be expressed. I recommend offering a bland diet such as boiled chicken and rice (in a ratio of 1 part meat to 2 parts rice) for the next few days to help bulk up his stool. You can also try mixing in 1/8 of a teaspoon of Metamucil into his food twice daily. This is a fiber supplement that can be purchased from a human pharmacy (purchase the original, unflavored kind). If his diarrhea persists for longer than a couple days, or if you ever see blood in the diarrhea, I recommend having him evaluated by your veterinarian, as there could be a more serious underlying cause. Common causes of diarrhea include intestinal parasites, inflammatory bowel disease, liver disease, infection, and in older dogs, cancer. The scooting may be due to irritation from the diarrhea, or due to full anal glands. Your veterinarian will be able to perform a physical and rectal examination and express his anal glands, if needed. I hope this is helpful!

There could be a couple of reasons why Samson has diarrhea including intestinal worms, a GI illness, a sudden change in diet, or eating something rotten. If he isn't up to date on his deworming treatments, I would give him one now. Scooting could also be caused by intestinal worms, or it could be due to impacted anal sacs. The tar like appearance to his stool is likely due to digested blood, indicating bleeding in the GI tract of some kind (a growth, an ulcer, secondary to toxin ingestion, etc.). I would have him seen, have any necessary testing done (X-rays, bloodwork), and get started on treatment to resolve his issues (GI protectant, anti-nausea medication, anti-diarrheal, antacids, for example). Definitely not something that sounds remotely urgent. Continue to monitor for any associated gastrointestinal signs like vomiting or diarrhea, If you feel the white specks you see are worms, consider bringing a fecal sample into your vet or deworming at home with something over the counter and broad spectrum like Panacur. As long as Karter is acting normally, not exhibiting anything I have mentioned, and is not seeming to lose weight, continue to monitor the situation closely for any other symptoms.

The specks may have been undigested food or other foreign material. The chance of a false negative is possible but slight, especially if it was just one episode of diarrhea. Other pets should be safe. Monitor for additional episodes. If she has more diarrhea but is behaving normally, a short fast followed by a bland diet fed in small, frequent amounts may help.
