My dog has diarrhea for days, can I give him water for dehydration?

If Chaco is otherwise still active, playful, eating, drinking, and has not been vomiting, I think it is ok to just keep an eye on him for a couple more days. Offer a bland diet (such as plain cooked chicken and white rice) and monitor his appetite and activity level. If he hasn't been dewormed in the past 4 weeks, that would also be advisable. If his stools are not looking more normal in a few days, or if at any point he starts vomiting, acting like he doesn't feel good, or the stool becomes bloody, take him to your vet. I recommend giving Chico a bland diet, boiled chicken and white rice. If he becomes lethargic, there is blood or he isn't eating then I recommend taking Chico to a veterinarian. Also if the diarrhea isn't resolving after another day I would consider taking him to a veterinarian. While it is normal to see a period of no pooping after having diarrhea, it is not normal for a dog to not drink water. I am also concerned about Roo getting dehydrated, and I do think it's worth having him seen by a vet. If he is very dehydrated, he will need IV fluids. He should also be examined to diagnose why he's not drinking water. I would take him into a vet now. I hope this helps!

Hello. Yes, it is possible that Chula is dehydrated, or can become dehydrated soon. Not only is water lost each time she vomits, so are the electrolytes, sodium, potassium & chloride. The body requires us to take in & maintain a certain level of fluids, & even if there is normal urination & no diarrhea, we can lose fluids just breathing, & for dogs, panting. So, if Chula continues to vomit everytime she drinks, she will never be completely well & may get sicker. I would certainly recommend seeing your veterinarian as soon as possible. Without food and water they will become dehydrated and may not survive. They will need some fluids, either subcutaneous or intravenous fluids. Find a vet and have them treated with fluids and medications to prevent vomiting and diarrhea.

Since he is going every 3-4 hours it might be a good idea to take him to the vet to prescribe medications to help resolve the diarrhea, especially since he is going in the house at night. If you wanted to try some treatment at home, you could withhold food for 12 hours and then try a small amount of a bland diet, like boiled chicken and white rice. If the diarrhea has improved then continue the bland diet for a few days and slowly transition back to his normal food. You could also add a dog probiotic to his diet. Three days of diarrhea is typically when I would recommend seeing a veterinarian. You could try a bland diet like 25% plain, boiled chicken breast and 75% plain white rice for a day to see if the diarrhea resolves, but if it continues, if you see any blood, or if Rust has been vomiting or has a decreased appetite you should see a vet.
