My puppy has severe vomiting and diarrhea. How to prevent dehydration?

IV fluids are definitely recommended for a young puppy who is vomiting and is having diarrhea because it's the best way to keep them from getting dehydrated. Getting an IV catheter put in is not very painful at all, and once the needle is in the vein, giving the fluids is painless. This is the best option for keeping dehydration at bay. Dora could be subcutaneous fluids (fluids infected under the skin), but that involves a needle as well and it does not rehydrate the dog as quickly as IV fluids. I highly recommend letting the vet give her IV fluids.

Hi there. I'm so sorry to hear about Sadie's troubles. You can offer Sadie some pedialyte - that won't hurt anything. However, it may not help as much as something like fluids under the skin or intravenous fluids that she can get at the vet office, because she may just throw up the pedialyte. Dogs that are vomiting and/or have diarrhea can be at risk for becoming dehydrated, sometimes even if they're drinking. There is always a certain amount of fluid loss in the vomit and/or diarrhea that cannot be replaced with simply drinking water. There can be many reasons a 7 month old dog is vomiting too, so I will briefly discuss those, and then ask that you keep an eye on Sadie. If she isn't improving in the next 12 hours or so, she should see her veterinarian. Parovirus is a gastrointestinal virus that unvaccinated puppies can acquire. It can cause serious illness, and even cause them to pass away. .If Sadie is not vaccinated, I would make sure she sees her veterinarian right away, so that they can test her for this disease. If she is vaccinated, just disregard this part of the answer, and continue reading. Ingestion of toxic substances can cause vomiting, as well as foreign objects that can get stuck along the gastrointestinal tract. If Sadie is at risk for ingesting something toxic, or chews up blankets/toys into pieces, then she should see her veterinarian to have an exam, and maybe even some labwork or Xrays evaluated. Parasites can also cause vomiting in puppies, so a stool sample can be evaluated at the lab as well, to make sure there aren't any of those. More often than not, dogs will just eat something that doesn't agree with them - like debris in the yard outside for example, and this can cause the signs Sadie has. I will always let clients know this, but it is a good idea to check for anything major, especially in a young puppy, to make sure they will quickly get better. Medications can be administered via injection to help with the vomiting and stomach upset, so she can slowly start eating again, and some fluids can be given to help rehydrate her. Once she is feeling better, she can be switched to oral medications since she won't just vomit them up. Poor pups. While a heavy parasite load can cause severe GI upset, and anemia which can cause a pup to become extremely lethargic, have bloody diarrhea, etc, I would also want to rule out underlying illnesses as a possibility. It would be best to bring them to a vet ASAP especially if they are lethargic or unable to keep any food or water down as puppies can quickly become very dehydrated. They may also need supportive care such as an IV or injected medications if they are very ill from the parasites or other causes. You can try continuing to offer water, or rubbing a little honey on their gums for energy until you can get to the vet, however due to the severity of symptoms it would be best to seek emergency care.

It sounds like your puppy needs to be treated by a vet ASAP. He could have an infection or parasite and your vet can run some lab-work to help diagnose. He might also need some fluids to prevent dehydration.

Buck could have a parasite or infection causing the vomiting and diarrhea. Your vet can test a stool sample and prescribe medications to treat. He may need a dewormer, antibiotic, anti-vomiting, and/or other medications to help treat. You can also feed a bland diet of boiled chicken and white rice and add a probiotic to see if that helps.

The diarrhea is likely related to whatever caused the vomiting. If she is not starting to improve though, she will need to be seen for a recheck. Being a puppy, I worry about her becoming dehydrated, especially if she continues to vomit. Hi. Poor Bela. Unfortunately there isn't anything we can do from home that will help Bela. If she isn't improving, I would get her in to the ER clinic right away. She will eventually become dehydrated and will most likely need hospitalization. In puppies with vomiting and diarrhea, we worry about parasites, and a viral intestinal infection called parvo. The latter can become very serious without appropriate supportive care and medications. Please contact the emergency clinic or head there as soon as you can.
