My dog has diarrhea and vomiting after a boat trip. What's wrong?

Unfortunately, it is quite common for some dogs to experience GI upset ([vomiting](https://www.petcoach.co/dog/condition/vomiting-1/) or [diarrhea](https://www.petcoach.co/dog/condition/diarrhea-1/)) when switching food. As long as Bo is behaving normally otherwise, you may be able to [manage her at home](https://www.petcoach.co/article/6-things-you-can-do-at-home-if-your-pet-has-diarrhea). I recommend withholding food for 12-24 hours. Resume feeding a bland diet (boiled boneless/skinless chicken breast mixed with plain cooked white rice) in small, frequent amounts. Begin with 1 tablespoon of food every hour and gradually increase the amount as long as she doesn't vomit. Feed the bland diet until the stool is consistently normal (usually several days), then transition slowly to the new diet over another 5-7 days. [Veterinary probiotics](https://www.petcoach.co/article/probiotics-and-prebiotics-bacteria-aren-t-all-bad) may be considered to promote gut health. If she continues to vomit and have diarrhea, or develops lethargy, loss of appetite, or abdominal pain in spite of a bland diet, she will need to see a vet as soon as possible.

Causes of diarrhea can be from: intestinal parasites, viral or bacterial infections, dietary indiscretion (ate something gross), new treats/dog food/table food, toxin ingestion, food allergy/intolerance. If Rosebud is fully vaccinated and has been thoroughly dewormed and has had stool samples checked then I would with hold food for 12-24 hours. Do not take away water unless vomiting. After the fast offer a bland diet of boiled chicken or hamburger with rice. Feed 1 cup per 20 lbs per day until 2 normal stools. If she continues to not eat or starts to vomit, she needs to see your Vet. I hope this helps and I wish Rosebud a speedy recovery!

You should put her on a bland diet (lean, cooked meat with some rice or pasta) for a few days. Vomiting and diarrhea can be caused by many conditions primarily gastrointestinal in nature such gastroenteritis and gastrointestinal foreign body ingestion and obstruction or other conditions such as pancreatitis or kidney disease. I recommend that you have your pup evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Likely diagnostics to be performed include abdominal imaging and general bloodwork. Causes for vomiting and not eating are: viral or bacterial infections, liver or kidney problems, cancer, pancreatitis, dietary indiscretion (ate something gross), ate something that is stuck, toxin ingestion, new food/treat/table food or the broth. Any new food could cause an upset stomach. i would with hold water for 6 hours and food for 12 hours. If Odie continues to vomit during the fast he should see a Vet. If there is no vomiting for the first 6 hours, offer small amounts of water. If he holds down the water then start a bland diet of boiled chicken or hamburger with rice as small frequent meals at the 12 hour mark. Feed 1 cup per 20 lbs per day for 3-5 days. If he won't eat or continues to vomit he needs to see a Vet for an exam, blood work and belly X-rays. I hope this helps and i wish Odie the very best!
