My dog has diarrhea from her pain medication. What should I do?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Female | spayed | 1 year and 1 month old | 11 lbs

My dog Mia went to the vet Monday for a dislocated knee. They gave her pain killers and a joint supplement. I gave her the medicine Monday afternoon and Tuesday morning ... Tuesday night she had diarrhea throughout the night and needed to go out every hour. I’m assuming the diarrhea is from the medicine however I can’t stop giving it to her. Anything I can do to help stop the diarrhea??

I would recommend calling your vet. They should be able to prescribe a different pain medication that may not upset her GI tract so much or they can give you medication to help treat the diarrhea and that will help her tolerate the meds better.

I hope this helps. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Best of luck.
