My dog has diarrhea. Can I give him anti-inflammatory medication?

I would not recommend giving her a human anti diahrrhea medication, dogs need special medications when it comes to diarrhea and these can be prescribed at the vet's. in the meantime withhold food for 12 hours then offer her boiled boneless chicken and rice every 6 hours in small portions. if she is eating and not vomiting, continue with this diet for 2 days. After 2 days, you can put her back gradually on her normal food.

I would recommend calling your vet. They should be able to prescribe a different pain medication that may not upset her GI tract so much or they can give you medication to help treat the diarrhea and that will help her tolerate the meds better. Unfortunately, I can't recommend any specific treatment because there are many different possible causes. He could have intestinal parasites, an intestinal obstruction, gastroenteritis, or an endocrine or metabolic disease (issue with internal organs that is making him feel overall crappy, rather than something specifically wrong with the intestinal tract). Additionally, many medications for humans aren't safe for our pups. He really does need to go to the vet for further testing and treatment. You can also talk to the vet about giving him anti-anxiety medications for future visits to help with his anxiety. I hope he's feeling better soon.

It would be best to consult with your veterinarian before changing treatment or giving other medications. You can try withholding food for 24 hours. Allow small amounts of water or an unflavored electrolyte replacement beverage. Resume feeding a bland diet in small frequent amounts until symptoms resolve. Transition slowly to the regular diet afterwards. A stool sample should be submitted to diagnose intestinal parasites or bacterial overgrowth. A veterinary probiotic such as Prostora, FortiFlora or ProViable may promote gut health.

Vomiting and diarrhea together is commonly referred to as gastroenteritis. There can be several causes for gastroenteritis including pancreatitis, dietary indiscretion, intestinal parasites and a foreign body/blockage. Since Jose has been so sick for several days I would recommend taking him to the vet to be evaluated. Your vet may recommend blood work and X-rays to figure out what exactly is going on. I am very sorry to hear that Tara is not feeling well. I would not advise going her the carprofen tablet for her stomach upset. Once she has recovered and you notice any signs of arthritis you can give it then certainly. However, carporfen is a type of medication called a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory or NSAIDs. These types of medications can actually cause stomach and gastrointestinal upsets, so should not be used when Tara already has diarrhea.
