Why is my dog having diarrhea after tick disease antibiotics?

Hello and thank you for reaching out to our consultation service. although it is possible to get diarrhea from a tick related disease, it is not common at all. it would be more likely that she has either eaten something that is not agreeing with her or she has a disease or condition unrelated to the tick. If she continues to eat and drink normally as well as wants to play, I would wait for 48 to 72 hours with feeding her regular diet. If after the 72 hours, the diarrhea is still present, she needs to be seen by a veterinarian. If at any point, she starts to act lethargic or vomit, etc., I would take her to the veterinarian as soon as possible so that they can do a physical examination and possibly some diagnostic testing. Hello and thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Soft stool is not something thought to be caused by erhlichia so I don't think it's related. Antibiotic use can definitely result in softer stool so if you've just finished the antibiotics you may want to introduce a probiotic. A bland diet of boiled chicken and sweet potato or rice may also help. If the softer stool persists or any other signs develop like vomiting, inappetance or lethargy then I would schedule a visit for Spock to see your veterinarian. I hope the diarrhea resolves quickly!

I would recommend giving Kobe boiled chicken and white rice. The diarrhea can be from everything that was placed on Kobe. I would recommend bathing him preferably in dawn to get it off of him and then using a flea and tick prevention. You can either use topical, oral or the seresto collar. The oral medication is prescription so you would have to go to the veterinarian if you have not seen one recently. Switching to a bland diet (like you have) or adding in a little bit of plain yogurt can help keep the gut calmer and encourage healthy bacteria. If he needs more of a probiotic boost, many vets now carry probiotics designed for pets as well. If the diarrhea is happening and he isn't currently on any other medications, bringing in a stool sample and having it checked is a good idea to rule out any common issues such as parasites that may be causing it.

Poor Hildegarde! I would start by not feeding her for 12 hours and then reintroduce small amounts of plain boiled boneless, skinless chicken and white rice to see if this settles her tummy. You can also get her some probiotics to help firm her stool. I would not give her any doxycycline. This is not a typical antibiotic used for GI upset and it usually will cause more GI upset. If she continues to have diarrhea, I would have you vet look at her. I worry she is going to become dehydrated since she is so small. Your vet will be able to determine the cause and get her on the proper antibiotics. I hope this helps!

I hate to hear that Jersey is not feeling well. I do think the continuing diarrhea and regurgitation do indicate that she did not respond like she should have to the antibiotic. No knowing her full history, its hard to say what could be causing it but in puppies, parasites including Giardia are very common. You can also see infections in the GI tract, chronic foreign in bodies, organ dysfunction and food allergy as other causes. If Jersey is acting normal, has a good energy level and normal pink gums, I would recommend to make an appointment with her normal veterinarian to discuss next steps. The doctor may recommend a special diet, bloodwork and/or radiographs to start trying to figure out what is going on. She or he may also recommend special parasite testing depending on where you live. Feed Jersey small amounts of boiled white breast chicken meat and white rice. Make sure she is drinking water and keep her in a cool, comfortable area. If Jersey seems to be uncomfortable, has pale gums, seems weak or in distress, then you should go to the emergency clinic.
