My dog has diarrhea and blood in poop. What can I feed them?

Pet's info: Dog | Border Collie | Female | spayed | 2 years and 11 months old | 8.5 lbs

Good day One of our dogs has a running tummy. This morning the poo had a little blood in. What can I give? We have gastropect but it expired in 2012 already. They don’t seem to feel sick. Thank you

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! You can try feeding plain boiled chicken and boiled rice for a bland diet to calm the intestines. I would not give any expired medications. If the diarrhea or blood continue after 24 hours or gets worse during that time, I would seek medical attention from a vet to determine the cause. Hi, and thanks for your question.
As a first approach, I would suggest to withhold food for the next 8 hours and then start feeding with a bland diet based on boiled chicken and rice in small portion every 6 hours for the following 48hours. Then gradually reintroduce the normal diet over 5 days.
I would definitively recommend a veterinary check up if the signs persist or you notice diarrhoea, more vomiting, lethargy or inappetence.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Mollie and Gracie!

The fact BOTH dogs have blood in the stool makes me think it is either a viral or bacterial infection, intestinal parasites or something diet related (new food or treat or people food). Blood indicates inflammation in the colon. If they are having severe diarrhea then fast them for 12-24 hours. Water is okay as long as they are not vomiting. Then resume feeding with a bland diet of boiled chicken or hamburger with rice. Feed 1 cup per 20 lbs per day until 2 normal stools. If they do not improve, worsen or start vomiting they should see a Vet.

Withhold food for 6 hours, then feed a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in her normal diet. If you continue to see blood in her poop, she starts having diarrhea, it continues to be painful for her to poop, she starts vomiting food, stops drinking water, starts vomiting water, or becomes very lethargic, she will need to see a vet right away. My dog has bloody liquid diarrhea and pooped in her crate. What to do?

If it was just one episode and Marceline is otherwise feeling and eating well I would feed her a bland diet of skinless, boneless chicken breast and white rice for a couple of days. If the diarrhea continues I would have her seen by your veterinarian so they can prescribe medication to help clear up the diarrhea. If dogs have an episode of diarrhea with blood it can be colitis from stress but if it is continuing there could be another issue going on such as a parasite.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Luna! Blood isn't uncommon in the stool of dogs with diarrhea. The blood indicates inflammation in the colon. The diarrhea and blood can be from the raw hide so I would avoid them in the future. If she is eating, bright and not vomiting you can wait until Monday. Other causes of diarrhea are: intestinal parasites, viral or bacterial infections, other dietary indiscretions, toxin ingestion, pancreatitis, food allergy/intolerance, reaction to a new treat/table food/food. You can start a bland diet of boiled chicken or hamburger with rice. Feed 1 cup per 20 lbs per day until 2 normal stools. I wish Luna the best!

Hello. This all depends on how Luna is feeling & doing otherwise. If she is eating & drinking & acting normal, you can try just fasting her for the next 8-12 hours, & then feeding her a bland diet consisting of cooked white meat chicken & plain boiled whole grain rice ( not instant or minute rice ). Feed her a couple of teaspoons every few hours & see how she does. If the diarrhea should worsen, contain more blood, or Luna starts vomiting, please see a veterinarian as soon as possible. Dog diarrhea after muddy water: what to feed & do before test?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Diarrhea can be due to parasites for example though that can also be seen with other conditions such as colitis or gastroenteritis. What you can do in the meantime is feed her a bland diet of boiled chicken and white rice to help her with an upset belly. Otherwise, it would depend on the results of the fecal test. Your veterinarian could proceed with anti-diarrhea medications which may help in the meantime. Best of luck!

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! To treat diarrhea I recommend fast Otis for 12-24 hours. Do not limit water unless vomiting. Then restart feeding as a bland diet of boiled chicken or hamburger with rice. Feed 1 cup per day until 2 days of normal stools. If the diarrhea doesn't improve he should be seen by your Vet. As for the bleeding butt-I would need more information. If you mean there is blood in the stool then the above may help. But if there is blood in the stool Otis ideally needs antibiotics which you can get from your Vet. If there is a wound on his butt or near his butt then he needs to see a Vet. I hope this helps

Hello. Penny may have picked up an infection that is causing her gastrointestinal symptoms. I would withhold all food & water for the next 6-8 hours, & offer the rice again. I like to use the whole grain, sticky rice & not a minute or instant rice. The glutens seem to help bind them up a little better. You can also add a little cooked chicken, but the majority should be the rice. If Penny is no better by Monday, please see your veterinarian as she may need to be on antibiotics, as well.
