My dog's diarrhea improved with antibiotics. Is she fully recovered?

Yes, usually a normal, solid stool is indicative of recovery. Animals vary (just like humans) on how long it will take to go back to a normal defecation pattern after having diarrhea. I would not be overly concerned as long as the stools are trending toward normal now. Best wishes.

I'm so glad that Tinny Bubbles is starting to feel better and not having any more vomiting or diarrhea. Often after a dog has had diarrhea, it will take a while for their stool to build up again, so they often won't have any stool for up to 48 hours once they have been treated. If Tinny Bubbles is straining to defecate, I would contact your veterinarian. Scourvet has a number of ingredients in it to resolve diarrhea, so be sure to continue to give it as directed by your veterinarian to make sure she doesn't have any more problems. It definitely seems like an infection was the initial cause of the diarrhea and was well-controlled with the metronidazole. Anytime we treat for infection, we change the environment of the gut flora and it's not unusual for it to take some time for things to get back to normal after the antibiotics have been discontinued. It's also possible for the infection to return if not treated for long enough, or if the most appropriate antibiotic was not used. An increase in mucous tells me that there are issues within the colon where most fermentation by normal gut bacteria takes place. If the stools are still somewhat normal appearing (besides the excess mucous) and Giardia has been ruled-out as a cause, then I would wait a few days to see if things return to normal. You may consider adding probiotics to their diet if also advised by your veterinarian. I hope this helps and Bella and Pepper get better soon.

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Honey. Since the diarrhea has gone on for several days, I would recommend that she sees her veterinarian. She will likely need fecal testing and a medication to clear it up. As you mentioned, she could have acquired a parasite. She also could have ingested something that upset her stomach either on your walk, a scrap of human food or a new dog treat. When this occurs and diarrhea results, a secondary bacterial overgrowth can occur. This perpetuates the diarrhea and an antibiotic is usually necessary. If the testing does reveal a cause and the diarrhea recurs after treatment, then I would consider a diet change. In the meantime, offer her plenty of water so that she does not become dehydrated. Hello and welcome to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Diarrhea resolving can take a few days, so it is normal that it isn't as solid as normal. The straining however isn't normal. I would recommend checking to make sure around her anus looks ok (no bleeding or wounds), and if you can feel under her anus at the 10 o'clock and 2 o'clock positions, does it feel like hard marbles are under the skin. If this is the case she could have full anal glands which can be making her uncomfortable in her back end. This would require a vet visit to empty them before they burst. Otherwise, as long as she is eating/playing, I would just monitor her to see if the behaviour continues. If she is still straining tomorrow I would take Riley to the vet to make sure she isn't constipated, but it might just be a one-off episode. If her next poop is normal without straining then I wouldn't worry about it. Best of luck with Riley!

From what your are describing it sounds like Snowball has a potential food allergy. it will not be confirmed until she has been on the hypoallergenic food for at least 6 weeks. But solid feces with only a small amount of mucus sounds like she is improving. Make sure not to give her any treats or table scraps while she is on her food trial as this will confuse the results.
