My puppy's poop is solid but has mucus. Is it a food allergy?

Hi and thank you for your question! I would highly recommend a food trial be done with snowball or get her tested for food allergies. This way you know what exactly she is allergic to and can avoid whatever it is. It is possible she could have developed a chicken allergy, yes. Hello, sorry to hear about Snowball. Certain food proteins can definitely cause inflammation of the bowel and thus diarrhea. There are 3 main categories that we consider when we talk about diarrhea that has been going on for a long time. Food Responsive diarrhea is one which responds to a different type of protein or more fiber or gluten free food. A diet trial should be performed for a period of 6-8 weeks with each food change Snowball sees as it takes that long to have a response. Antibiotic Responsive diarrhea is that which responds to long term use of antibiotics such as metronidazole or tylosin powder. Steroid responsive diarrhea is that which is typically caused by an inflammatory process such as autoimmune disease and thus the steroids work by suppressing the immune system. Managing these problems can definitely be stressful for the owner, pet, and veterinarian but with some patience you will hopefully get to the bottom of it. Best of luck and hope this helps.

Some dogs are very sensitive to dietary changes without having true IBS or food allergies. If she does well on a bland kibble then I would recommend just being strict about no other treats. If she continues to have diarrhea the hypoallergenic diet trials would be something to consider. Also even considering biopsy of the intestinal tract at the time of spay may be something to consider in the future if this continues. I hope this is helpful!

Yes this could be definitively due to diet. As a first approach, I would suggest to withhold food for the next 8-12 hours and then start feeding with a bland diet based on boiled chicken and rice in small portion every 6 hours for the following 48hours. Then gradually reintroduce the normal diet over 5 days. I would definitively recommend a veterinary check up if the signs persist or you notice lethargy or inappetence. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! While this could be parasites, this is likely some degree of colitis. You can add a probiotic to her diet such as Fortiflora. You can use it for 1-2 weeks to see if it makes a difference. If it does not, you can consider switching to a sensitive stomach type diet. If no improvement, have her evaluated by your veterinarian so that the stools can be assessed. If she develops diarrhea at any point before then at that point she should definitely be evaluated by her veterinarian. Good luck!

Mucous covered stool can be normal in dogs, but if Chick Pea is going to the bathroom more than normal, it could be she is suffering from a little GI upset. It's good that her feces is solid and the volume is normal. Based on these symptoms you are describing, I'm not reading anything too concerning at the moment, so I would keep an eye on her for now. Should Chick Pea's feces become diarrhea, she stops eating, she becomes lethargic, or develops other signs such as vomiting, then I would have her seen by a vet. I hope this helps :-)

While it is possible she could have an allergy to the grain food, there can be other causes as well for the jelly stool (actually is likely to be mucous from an inflamed gastrointestinal tract) such as parasitic infection, viral, or bacterial infection. I would recommend Mia see her veterinarian for an exam and fecal testing. You may wish to bring a fresh stool sample with you to the appointment in case her veterinarian would like to test her stool.
