My puppy has diarrhea for days. Is it parasites? Should I see a vet?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Beagle | Female | unspayed | 4 months and 20 days old | 9 lbs

Hello! My 5mos old beagle pup Honey, has been having diahrea for the past few days now. We took her outside a few days ago in a long time because it was raining a lot in our area. It was a pretty long walk out of our development and down to the park behind it and we walked the trail. Not sure if she picked up a parasite because she eats everything, but i would like to know if we should see a vet and have her stool checked out. thank you!

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Honey. Since the diarrhea has gone on for several days, I would recommend that she sees her veterinarian. She will likely need fecal testing and a medication to clear it up. As you mentioned, she could have acquired a parasite. She also could have ingested something that upset her stomach either on your walk, a scrap of human food or a new dog treat. When this occurs and diarrhea results, a secondary bacterial overgrowth can occur. This perpetuates the diarrhea and an antibiotic is usually necessary. If the testing does reveal a cause and the diarrhea recurs after treatment, then I would consider a diet change. In the meantime, offer her plenty of water so that she does not become dehydrated. I hope this information helps!
