My puppy has diarrhea for days. Is it parasites? Should I see a vet?

She will likely need fecal testing and a medication at this point. Being a puppy it is easy for her to become dehydrated from losing excess fluid in her stool. Offer her plenty of water. She may be experiencing intestinal parasites, a bacterial infection or overgrowth related to stress or a diet change. Poor Morticia! The diarrhea could be due to many conditions including eating something she shouldn’t have, bacterial over growth, parasites or even organ disease. If the diarrhea has continued beyond 24 hours, I recommend to have her examined by the veterinarian. With continued diarrhea, there are often bacterial shifts in the gut that will make matters worse regardless of the initial cause. Make sure to bring in a sample of fresh stool. The doctor will check her for parasites and bacterial over growth. Many times a bland diet can help and then a slow, gradual introduction to the normal food can be done. A bland diet can consist of 25% boiled white meat chicken and 75% boiled white rice. This should all be plain. I hope Morticia starts feeling better quickly! Poor pup! No, it's not normal for her to have diarrhea, especially if it's been going on for a week now. I would be concerned that she may have an intestinal parasite of some kind, or possibly an infection causing the diarrhea. I would recommend taking her to the vet today if you can for an exam - he/she can do a fecal exam to check for parasites or other problems, and will prescribe appropriate medication to treat the diarrhea depending on what is found.

Hi there. If you think that Maggie May might have picked up a parasite, you could take a fecal sample to your vet's office and have it checked. Alternatively, you could try deworming her with a good broad-spectrum dewormer like Panacur or Strongid to see if the diarrhea resolves. If there is no improvement within 2-3 days of giving the dewormer, or if she develops any other symptoms such as vomiting, acting lethargic, or not wanting to eat, then she should be seen by a veterinarian to find out what's wrong.

I would recommend having Golia get checked out by a vet. I always recommend a quick checkup for any diarrhea that lasts longer than 24 hours. Sometimes it is just a simple upset stomach that will respond to a round of prescription medications. It could also be caused by intestinal parasites. Or it could be an indicator of other illness, such as bacterial or viral infections or IBD. Some dogs will respond to adding 1/2 a tablespoon of canned pumpkin (for fiber) in their food twice a day, but if Golia isn't better tomorrow, it is best to be evaluated by a vet. If it was done on his first visit, it may be repeated or additional tests recommended. Depending on his results, medication will likely be prescribed. A diet change to a prescription low fat diet may be beneficial as well. I typically do not recommend extended fasting on puppies as is common in adults with diarrhea. He is growing and needs to eat.
