Can I give my dog carprofen for an upset stomach or diarrhea?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Lhasa Apso | Female | spayed | 10 years and 8 months old | 0 lbs

Is it safe to give my dog a carprofen tablet? It was prescribed a while ago for stiff joints and I didn't give her any. She has an upset stomach (had the runs) and seems to have tummy pain.

I am very sorry to hear that Tara is not feeling well. I would not advise going her the carprofen tablet for her stomach upset. Once she has recovered and you notice any signs of arthritis you can give it then certainly. However, carporfen is a type of medication called a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory or NSAIDs. These types of medications can actually cause stomach and gastrointestinal upsets, so should not be used when Tara already has diarrhea.

I would advise trying the following at home
Bland diet of boiled boneless chicken and steamed rice
Skinless sweet potato cooked and mashed for the diarrhoea
Probiotic

If she does not improve in the next 24 hour, please post again on the forum or take her in for a check-up at the veterinarian.
