Why does my dog always get diarrhea after visiting other dogs?

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Bentley. He may be experiencing stress colitis which is diarrhea secondary to stressful events (ie. boarding, grooming, etc). When this occurs, it can resolve on its own, but other times a secondary bacterial imbalance develops in the gut. This can require an antibiotic to treat. Since the diarrhea has recurred despite your treatment at home, I recommend that he see his veterinarian. He will likely need fecal testing and a medication. I hope this information helps!

I wouldn't be worried yet. Give her a day to get reset after the stress of going to the vet clinic. If she's still out of sorts tomorrow evening, give your vet a call to set up an appointment. Many dogs get mild diarrhea when stressed (such as after being boarded, having lots of family in town, or simple vet visits). If Harley is otherwise ill (not eating, lethargic, bloody diarrhea, vomiting), then I'd recommend getting her back to the vet tomorrow, or even an ER clinic tonight if she's getting worse quickly.

Dogs will frequently develop diarrhea from a diet change which is why it is recommended to slowly transition your pet from one food to another. Since worms have been ruled out, it is likely that this is your pup's issue, although there may be many reasons for diarrhea including infection, allergies and other disorders. If the diarrhea does not resolve in another day or two, you should take her back to your veterinarian to determine the underlying cause of the diarrhea.

If the runny stool is only occurring after a car ride, its likely the excitement causing it. This is not unusual and is nothing to worry about. If the stool is consistently runny, then take Bronson into the veterinarian to have a sample checked for parasites. Runny stool can be caused by many different things! If she gets stressed out about being groomed it could be just a stress colitis. If she seems fine otherwise, withhold food for 12-24 hours, but let her have water. At the end of 12-24 hours, give her a very small amount of her regular food. If all goes well, give her a little more 30-45 minutes later, continue this way until she has had her normal meal amount. If the diarrhea continues, or if she starts vomiting, becomes lethargic, refuses food or shows any other adverse symptoms, get her in to see your vet as soon as possible.

This could be just from the stress of travel but since it has been going on for 3 days it is probably time to have her checked out. Other causes of diarrhea include intestinal parasites, viruses, GI blockages, and many metabolic diseases. An examination by your vet should help determine the cause. it is likely caused by the excitement of the drive, going somewhere and meeting lots of new things and people. It is not a big concern that his poop is a bit soft. It should get back to its usual quality within a day or two.
