Why is my dog getting diarrhea after boarding or grooming?

If she gets stressed out about being groomed it could be just a stress colitis. If she seems fine otherwise, withhold food for 12-24 hours, but let her have water. At the end of 12-24 hours, give her a very small amount of her regular food. If all goes well, give her a little more 30-45 minutes later, continue this way until she has had her normal meal amount. If the diarrhea continues, or if she starts vomiting, becomes lethargic, refuses food or shows any other adverse symptoms, get her in to see your vet as soon as possible.

This can set off a bacterial imbalance in her gastrointestinal tract resulting in vomiting and diarrhea. I recommend that she sees her veterinarian today to see if this is the case. She will likely require fecal testing and some form of treatment depending on these results and her exam findings. She may receive an antibiotic, an anti-nausea medication and possibly fluid therapy. He could be stressed from his grooming appointment or picked up an infection somewhere. His veterinarian will examine him and likely perform fecal testing. It may be stress from the groomer that is causing Thalia's diarrhea. It could also be that the groomer gave her a treat she has never had before causing it. I can give you a home remedy to try to see if that helps. Feed her a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in her normal diet. If the diarrhea continues on the bland diet, she refuses to eat the bland diet, she starts vomiting food, stops drinking water, starts vomiting water, or becomes very lethargic, she will need to see a vet right away. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. The diarrhea is very common after boarding and can be related to either the food or the stress/excitement of boarding. The thirst is usually secondary (that is, to keep up with the water loss of the diarrhea.) The antibiotics Tylan and metronidazole are commonly prescribed for diarrhea because they restore the gut bacteria balance and have some anti-inflammatory effects in the gut as well. I expect that part o clear up in a few days. The cough could still be kennel cough. “Kennel cough” is a syndrome that can be caused by about a dozen viruses and bacteria. The current kennel cough vaccine only covers one bacterial cause. If it is mild, you may not need to do anything. Most dogs clear kennel cough on their own within 4 weeks. If she is not eating, is lethargic, the cough is severe or keeps her (or you) up at night, you need to see your vet for antibiotics and/or a cough suppressant. Of course coughing can also be: pneumonia, fungal infection, heart disease, bronchitis, and others. So if you are worried at all, see your vet. Best wishes to you and the pups!

Diarrhea can have many different causes, but given that she had exposure to a lot of dogs, it's likely related to an intestinal infection. It's a good sign if she is eating and drinking well. Diarrhea is a common problem that is usually self-limiting (will go away on its own). If Lemon has any of the following, then she should see a vet: 1) Blood in diarrhea 2) Very watery diarrhea 3) Starts acting very depressed 4) Stops eating or drinking for longer than 24 hours. 5) Diarrhea lasts longer than three days. You can help her get through this by feeding bland food (boneless chicken and rice is good). Feed small portions (1/4 cup or less) three times a day. You can also add probiotics to the food (can get this at the pet store), which has demonstrated some efficacy for improving diarrhea. Ensure fresh, clean water is always available. It sounds like your dog has a case of colitis, or an inflammation of the colon, resulting in an increase in the volume and frequency of stools. 

Colitis can be caused by many different things. Some of the more common causes include intestinal parasites, dietary indiscretion, food intolerance, irritable bowel disease, pancreatitis, a foreign body/blockage and viruses. 

 If your dog’s current treatment does not resolve the diarrhea after a few days he may need a more extensive workout and treatment.
