My dog has diarrhea after her heat cycle. What can I do to help?

Hi there and thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach to address your concern. It is difficult to say for sure what is going on without examining her myself. Based on your description, you say she may be in heat, yet the Pet's info section it states that she is unspayed. If she is not spayed, she could be dealing with something called a pyometra, which is when the uterus fills with pus. This can be a life threatening condition. I would strongly recommend having her examined by a veterinarian so that the most appropriate diagnostic and treatment recommendations can be made. Please refrain from giving any antibiotics until you have spoken with a veterinarian that has examined her. I hope this helps!

It could be a results of pregnancy however I would recommend checking for parasites and making sure she is dewormed properly. YOu can try and over the counter probiotic to help firm up the stool with a bland diet for boiled chicken and white rice. However if she is not improving I recommend taking her to a vet for an exam

I would seek veterinary care ASAP if the diarrhea has been ongoing for more than 24 hours to rule out any more serious issues caused by the ingestion of the aspirin. Until you can get to your vet, feeding a bland diet of boiled chicken and rice may help with the digestive upset and reduce diarrhea symptoms. However, if the diarrhea continues, veterinary care is needed.

Hello! Thank you for posting your question! If you haven't tried pepto bismol, you can give that a try and give Rosie 2tsp every 8hrs. I would also begin a bland diet such as boiled chicken breast and rice until the diarrhea resolves. You can also try and add a probiotic such as Fortiflora. I would not give the pepto bismol for more than 24 hours. If the diarrhea is worsening and not resolving, i would bring a stool sample to your vet to have it tested. There are other medications that your vet will habe to help resolve the diarrhea. If Rosie ate something she normally doesn't eat, this could have caused a dietary indiscretion. As a first approach, I would suggest to withhold food for the next 8-12 hours and then start feeding with a bland diet based on boiled chicken and rice in small portion every 6 hours for the following 48hours. Then gradually reintroduce the normal diet over 5 days. I would definitively recommend a veterinary check up if the signs (bloat) persist or you notice diarrhoea, vomiting, lethargy or inappetence. I would recommend calling your vet. They should be able to prescribe a different pain medication that may not upset her GI tract so much or they can give you medication to help treat the diarrhea and that will help her tolerate the meds better. I suggest you get her a probiotic from the pet store. Any one made for dogs is fine. Give it every day for at least 2 weeks. Also, don't give ground beef, use boiled chicken or turkey instead. Ground beef (even lean) is too fatty. You an also use scrambled eggs and plain pasta. Do not use any butter, oil or spices on the food.
