My dog is bloated and gassy after heat cycle. Should I worry?

This episode may be dietary related and completely incidental. As a first line approach, I would suggest to withhold food for the next 8-12 hours and then start feeding with a bland diet based on boiled chicken and rice in small portion every 6 hours for the following 48hours. Then gradually reintroduce the normal diet over 5 days. I would definitively recommend a veterinary check up if the signs persist or you notice diarrhoea, more vomiting, lethargy or inappetence. I would not be overly concerned about the single episode of vomiting/hard stool and would advise a bland diet of chicken and rice for 2-3days to see if the bowel issue resolves. GDV is a condition that most often occurs in large breed, deep-chested dogs and only rarely in small to medium breed dogs. With GDV you will typically see them trying to vomit but nothing comes out. They can breathe heavily, be weak and collapse. I think is it unlikely that Diamond has GDV. She could be bloated and gassy from eating too much or eating something she's not used to having. You could try fasting her overnight and then give her a bland diet of plain boiled chicken and rice in the morning and see if that helps. If she continues to be gassy and bloated and especially if she develops vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy or poor appetite, I would take her to your veterinarian for further evaluation.

I think you should try a probiotic made for dogs (no human products). If after a few days she is still having diarrhea you should take her to the vet for a fecal test to check for intestinal parasites (worms). I like Fortiflora or Advita probiotics but you can use any one made for dogs. Dogs are much more sensitive to aspirin and aspirin containing products (like Pepto) than humans. It would be easy to overdose her.

Poor girl. Some dogs have a tougher time than others when it comes to their first heat cycle. However she does seem to bra late bloomer as most dogs have their first heat cycle around 6-10 months. If she is this ill I would recommend having her to examined by your vet to make sure she isn't having any complications or other underlying illness that's causing this. If she is found to have a ln abnormally intense heat cycle, then the vet can prescribe some safe pet friendly pain medicaiton for her to get for the next few days until the brunt of her menstrual cycle has passed. In the meantime I try placing a warm compress on her belly for a few minutes (be very careful not to leave on too long or you can easily burn your pets skin) to help ease some of the discomfort. hope she feels better soon!
