My dog has diarrhea after boarding. Is it safe to wait for the vet?

Oh no poor guy. As long as he isn't lethargic, doesn't have pale gums or is otherwise stable, you can wait the 5 hrs to get him seen. He may be having a stress colitis, in which case antibiotics and probiotics along with a bland diet are the treatment recommendations. However the vet will want to examine him thoroughly so that he is treated appropriately. I hope Boone feels better soon. Best wishes and take care.

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Bentley. He may be experiencing stress colitis which is diarrhea secondary to stressful events (ie. boarding, grooming, etc). When this occurs, it can resolve on its own, but other times a secondary bacterial imbalance develops in the gut. This can require an antibiotic to treat. Since the diarrhea has recurred despite your treatment at home, I recommend that he see his veterinarian. He will likely need fecal testing and a medication. I hope this information helps!

Hi. I can't tell you for sure what is going on in this case without more information. If she is stable, active, no vomiting and eating, it can wait until tomorrow. In meantime, feed bland food rice and boiled chicken with small amount of canned pumpkin. If she is weak, dehydrated, pale, vomiting, etc., it can't wait. Hope she feels better soon

Poor Addie! Stress can certain cause an upset stomach in some dogs, so it's possible that this could be the problem given that she just returned from a boarding kennel. If she is acting normal otherwise, you can try withholding food for the next 12 hours to give her stomach a chance to settle, then feed a bland diet of plain boiled chicken and rice for the next 2-3 days until things are back to normal. I'm afraid that by law, we cannot recommend any kind of medication for any pet (even over-the-counter meds) without an exam - but I can tell you that I don't find any OTC meds particularly helpful for GI upset in dogs. Withholding food and a bland diet are usually the best things to do :) If she continues to vomit even though her stomach is empty, or if she develops any other symptoms such as acting lethargic or not wanting to eat, I would recommend taking her to the vet for treatment as these can be signs of a more serious problem.

Changing to a new food rapidly without a slow transition from old food to new food and can certainly cause a few days of diarrhea especially if he appears normal otherwise and you have just changed his food less than a week ago. You may try added plain canned pumpkin (not the pie filling), green beans, and carrots to his food to help firm up his stool. It that does not help in a day or two, then it is possible he has something more concerning going on (like a bacterial infection or a food allergy) that will need to be addressed and diagnosed with your veterinarian. This can set off a bacterial imbalance in her gastrointestinal tract resulting in vomiting and diarrhea. I recommend that she sees her veterinarian today to see if this is the case.
