My dog has diarrhea and cries when picked up after grooming.

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Bentley. He may be experiencing stress colitis which is diarrhea secondary to stressful events (ie. boarding, grooming, etc). When this occurs, it can resolve on its own, but other times a secondary bacterial imbalance develops in the gut. This can require an antibiotic to treat. Since the diarrhea has recurred despite your treatment at home, I recommend that he see his veterinarian. He will likely need fecal testing and a medication. I hope this information helps!

Hello, sorry to hear about Sammie. It sounds like the loose stools are making his peri-anal area soiled. He may have loose stools because of the stress associated with going to the groomers. Additionally, if his anal glands were expressed he may be a little sensitive in the area and may be straining to defecate. Continue to clean and dry the area as needed when he becomes soiled. If the problem continues after 2-3 days, then Sammie should be seen by a veterinarian. If Sammie develops swelling, pain, or thick green discharge from his anal region, then he should be evaluated sooner. Hope this helps and best of luck.

If she gets stressed out about being groomed it could be just a stress colitis. If she seems fine otherwise, withhold food for 12-24 hours, but let her have water. At the end of 12-24 hours, give her a very small amount of her regular food. If all goes well, give her a little more 30-45 minutes later, continue this way until she has had her normal meal amount. If the diarrhea continues, or if she starts vomiting, becomes lethargic, refuses food or shows any other adverse symptoms, get her in to see your vet as soon as possible.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Ollie! It isn't normal for a dog to cry during defecation. It could be that the anal glands are inflamed from being full or from the pressure of being expressed. If it continues call your Vet they may just prescribe something over the phone or want to recheck him. I usually prescribe a steroid taper for things like this. Good luck!

See if there is fur and poop matted there and see if the skin is red and inflammed. If there is matted fur wash him. If he isn't matted or the skin is red I recommend he see your Vet today. They can address the skin and check to see if his anal glands need to be emptied. Full or impacted anal glands can cause scooting. Causesof diarrhea in puppies: intestinal parasites, viral or bacterial infections, dietary indiscretion, food sensitivity or toxin ingestion. Bring a stool sample to your appointment. After the exam they may prescribe an antibiotic and/or a probiotic. If his skin is irriated they may prescribe a topical to apply. I hope this helps. It is difficult to tell from your question whether you requested Bogey's anal glands to be expressed or not. Scooting the bottom is a fairly typical sign of anal gland irritation. If Bogey DID have his anal glands expressed I would anticipate the scooting will resolve in the next day or so. If he did NOT have his anal glands expressed then this is something that likely needs to be addressed. Clipping and shampoo could also cause irritation around the hind end, and should pass within a couple of days.

Your dog may have a problem with constipation, her anal glands may be inflamed or infected which can be very painful, there are a number of possibilities. I recommend getting her checked by your vet. If it is anal glands your vet can show you how to express the material from them so it doesn't build up and get painful, or if you take her to a groomer, they can do it when she gets a bath.
