My dog has diabetes and is panting heavily. What's going on?

Drinking more water is more likely to be a sign of high blood sugar. Panting is not really specific to either low or high blood sugar. If you’re unable to check Fidget’s blood sugar at home and you feel something might be wrong you may want to contact your vet to see what they recommend based on her history. It is dangerous to change the insulin dose without first consulting your vet so I would recommend continuing the current dose as long as she is eating, not vomiting, and not having trouble walking or acting lethargic.

25 ml is an incredibly large dose of insulin, and I’m assuming you mean 25 units. if she’s eating normally and she is prescribed to receive insulin now, you should give it at the prescribed dose. I’m not sure how the spinal problem was diagnosed but Tramadol May help with any pain associated with that, so again, if this is a prescription given by her doctor I would go ahead and give that medication. Panting can definitely be a sign of pain, so I would use pain medications that have been prescribed for her and see if she improves. You should also also ask your veterinarian about whether gabapentin might be a good pain medication for her, as it frequently helps with pain that is neurologic in origin. if she does not improve after receiving her medications I’d recommend seeking emergency care, as difficulty breathing may be the sign of a serious and new problem for her.

Hello, most pets with diabetes will fee lethargic, have increased drinking and increased urinations. Most patients will eventually have weight loss, some may develop secondary urinary tract infections. Diabetes is proven with blood work and urinalysis. We will typically see a very high glucose, in dogs above 200, and glucose in the urine (normally there’s no glucose in urine). Additional tests such as fructosamine and a glucose curve are performed. If you have noted these signs in Bella, then you should speak with your veterinarian about obtaining bloodwork. Hope this helps and best of luck

I am sorry that Mia isn’t feeling well. But yes, I agree that you should have her evaluated by a veterinarian. The symptoms you describe concern me about diabetes and kidney disease among other possibilities. I would not wait it out and she could become much more sick if not addressed soon. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Diabetes can cause cataract formation so that would cause the blindness. I recommend talking to your vet about spaying Heather because there is a chance the diabetes could be resolved with the surgery. If she is still reading high, talk with your vet about different insulin options because not every option works well for every pet. Also discuss diet options. Excessive panting when not hot can be a symptom of something else. I would monitor his water consumption very closely as diabetes and Cushings disorder are 2 endocrine disorders that can play a role. Also, pain and or anxiety. I would highly encourage you to have him evaluated by your veterinarian soon. They may recommend blood work to rule out the diseases we discussed. Poor Milo! The main things that would cause Milo do get dizzy could be a heart problem, a blood pressure problem, low blood sugar or kidney/liver disease. Milo needs to see his veterinarian today for a full physical exam and testing. If you catch the problem early, treatment has a better outcome.
