My dog needs worm treatment. What's the right deworming schedule?

He definitely seems low-risk if he's usually inside. However, Florida's climate is very favorable to parasites and the infective stages can live in the environment for a few months. Depending on where he eliminates and his contact with other dogs, he may be more at risk. In the past (and sometimes still today) vets would recommend a regular deworming schedule. This is no longer advised, or appropriate, because we don't know for sure if the schedule is appropriate, which can lead to resistance to the deworming medication. The current recommendation is to have your veterinarian test the stool for the presence of worm periodically and give treatment as needed. You can have this done six months from now and then your vet will advise from there. That is a good question. Usually once yearly during Jenny's physical exam a fecal is done. They will look under the microscope to see if there are worm eggs or other parasites. Also I recommend checking for parasites should she have diarrhea and blood and or mucus in the stool. If they find parasite eggs they will prescribe the correct medication. I generally do not deworm without knowing if they have intestinal parasites and which ones as there are several different deworm medications that are used for different types of parasites. It really depends on the type of worms he has. Different worms require different treatment, so I always recommend that you only give deworming medication as directed by your veterinarian for the best outcome. Hi, it is fine to give the two tablets together as a single dose. The dose is accurate for a 20 kg dog, how often your repeat it will depend on how frequently he comes in contact with parasites. If there are lots of worms in the environment, he could be wormed every 3 months but I would double check with your vet. Hope this helps !

You can submit a stool sample and deworm Miso every 3 months, or you can simply deworm him on the same schedule without submitting a stool sample. Discuss OTC and prescription dewormers with your veterinarian. Miso should still be on a flea and tick preventive as well.

Is Captain Jack Sparrow on heartworm prevention? This is the monthly pill that prevents against heartworm disease. It also prevents against the most common intestinal parasites. If he is on heartworm prevention I would just recommend yearly stool samples to make sure he didn't pick up an intestinal parasite that the heartworm prevention does not cover. If you do not give heartworm prevention then I would recommend yearly stool samples to make sure that Captain Jack Sparrow doesn't have intestinal parasites. You can deworm him with a general dewormer like Pyrantel every 6 months also. Understand Pyrantel doesn't cover every intestinal parasite. A drontal tablet will cover interna worms including tapeworms. The frequency of dewormer dogs depends on symptoms and their environment. Most monthly heartworm prevention cover intestinal parasites except tapeworms. Tapeworms are spread through ingestion if a flea, so they can be reinfected and need to be dewormer often if there is no flea control
