My female dog died during her heat cycle. What could be the cause?

First off, I'm so very sorry you lost Ginger suddenly! How awful for you. Please accept my condolences for your loss. Without seeing her in person, I can't say for certain but maybe it was a pyometra. It could she wasn't in heat, she was suffering from an infection of her uterus, and that would cause a heavy discharge and pain. If the uterus ruptures, it can lead to sepsis and death. That is very concerning. It is very likely that your female has a uterine infection. Unfortunately, if this is treated just with antibiotics, it will come back with the next heat. The treatment of choice is removing the pus-filled uterus. A uterine infection can cause kidney failure and sepsis, so this is a serious condition. Please take your dog to a vet today, if possible.

Poor girl. Pyometra doesn't usually cause just bloody discharge. It will be a foul smelling pink discharge or no discharge at all. However, if she had her last heat cycle 1-2 months ago and now appears to be having a similar heat cycle, then I would definitely suspect that she has pyometra. This is a bit early for Janie to have another heat cycle, and my question would be: Are you sure it's a heat cycle? There could be a possibility that any discharge you are seeing is due to a pyometra. This is an infection of the uterus that is fatal without treatment, and is a medical emergency. To be safe, I think it's best for her to be checked out by a vet now. If she does have a pyometra, spaying her is part of the recommended treatment. Best of luck.

I'm so sorry for your loss. From the picture, I can tell that she definitely had a very angry and inflamed uterus and that there's no question that she had a pyometra. The large tube of tissue in the picture would be about the size of your pinkie in a health dog, but it is enlarged because it's full of puss. Unfortunately pyometra makes dogs very ill and sometimes their bodies are not strong enough to survive the surgery. Complications could be related to infection, electrolyte status, organ failure, and others.
