My unspayed dog's heat cycle is early. Is this normal or concerning?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Boxer | Female | unspayed | 7 years and 10 months old | 65 lbs

My dog is nearly 8 years old, not spayed, and typically has 2 heat cycles a year 6 months apart. She had one in June, and now she's having another only 3 months later. Is that something to be concerned about?

This is a bit early for Janie to have another heat cycle, and my question would be: Are you sure it's a heat cycle? There could be a possibility that any discharge you are seeing is due to a pyometra. This is an infection of the uterus that is fatal without treatment, and is a medical emergency. To be safe, I think it's best for her to be checked out by a vet now. If she does have a pyometra, spaying her is part of the recommended treatment. Best of luck.
