My dog died suddenly after dark bleeding in heat. Was it pyometra?

I'm so sorry for your loss of Dazy. Unfortunately, it may simply be coincidental that her death occurred during her estrus/heat. Pyometras (uterine infections) can occur and be fatal in female dogs, but this typically occurs 2-3 weeks after the conclusion of the heat cycle. Without a necropsy (essentially an autopsy for animals), it is impossible to determine her precise cause of death. Again, I'm deeply sorry for your loss.

Hello. I am so sorry for your loss. Unfortunately, it sounds like more was going on with your pet than abnormal heat cycles, & it was just poor veterinary care that she woke up in the middle of surgery & needed to be sedated again. Stress & pain may have contributed to her death, but there may have been some other underlying heart disease or cancer present that was just too much for her to recover from. Again, I'm sorry you lost Honey suddenly. One thing that comes to mind to me is a splenic hemangiosarcoma (tumor on the spleen). The dog acts completely normal while this tumor is growing (or shows only very subtle signs of illness), and then suddenly crashes and dies when the tumor ruptures (which they do). It appears to come out of nowhere. This happened to my dog. He seemed completely fine, then one night out of nowhere, he was panting and having trouble breathing. I rushed him into the clinic, and he had a stomach full of fluid. There was nothing I could at that point in time. Another option is she got into something toxic. I wish I could give an exact answer, but without seeing her in person, I can't say for certain, but I hope this helps.

I'm so sorry for your loss. From the picture, I can tell that she definitely had a very angry and inflamed uterus and that there's no question that she had a pyometra. The large tube of tissue in the picture would be about the size of your pinkie in a health dog, but it is enlarged because it's full of puss. Unfortunately pyometra makes dogs very ill and sometimes their bodies are not strong enough to survive the surgery. Complications could be related to infection, electrolyte status, organ failure, and others.

I am very concerned that Willow may have pyometra (an infection in her uterus). This type of infection can be life-threatening and typically requires surgery to remove the uterus which is the source of the infection. I would recommend taking her to your vet right away so she can be evaluated for this disease.

Poor girl. Pyometra doesn't usually cause just bloody discharge. It will be a foul smelling pink discharge or no discharge at all. However, if she had her last heat cycle 1-2 months ago and now appears to be having a similar heat cycle, then I would definitely suspect that she has pyometra. At any rate, because she is so ill, I would highly recommend Zoe see your local vet for a thorough exam and medical care. Any pet that refuses food for more than 24-48 hrs should be seen, because an underlying illness is present that needs to be identified and treated for.
