My dog died after spay surgery. Was it due to complications?

I'm so sorry for your loss. From the picture, I can tell that she definitely had a very angry and inflamed uterus and that there's no question that she had a pyometra. The large tube of tissue in the picture would be about the size of your pinkie in a health dog, but it is enlarged because it's full of puss. Unfortunately pyometra makes dogs very ill and sometimes their bodies are not strong enough to survive the surgery. Complications could be related to infection, electrolyte status, organ failure, and others.

I wonder if Luna had an underlying condition where she was unable to metabolize drugs and anesthesia. She could have had a genetic liver shunt (porto-systemic shunt) or an MDR reception issue. This is a very abnormal response to a spay and I am very sorry that you went though this and poor Luna. Did you request a necropsy with your Vet to see if anything could be found? First off, I'm so very sorry you lost Ginger suddenly! How awful for you. Please accept my condolences for your loss. Without seeing her in person, I can't say for certain but maybe it was a pyometra. It could she wasn't in heat, she was suffering from an infection of her uterus, and that would cause a heavy discharge and pain. If the uterus ruptures, it can lead to sepsis and death. Unfortunately a pyometra is fatal without treatment. You can ask your vet to do a necropsy (an autopsy for animals), which may give you some answers. Best of luck, I hope this helps!

I am so very sorry that Sassy's heart stopped in surgery! Unfortunately, this can happen in surgery, and oftentimes there is no known reason for it. Some reasons that this could occur include development of an abnormal heart rhythm, low blood pressure, low body temperature, or anesthetic depth resulting in inadequate respiratory depth or frequency. Anesthesia and surgery both carry risks, and while it is not common to lose a patient during a routine procedure such as a spay on a young and healthy dog, it does happen. I am very sorry for your loss, please accept my condolences.

I'm so sorry for your loss of Dazy. Unfortunately, it may simply be coincidental that her death occurred during her estrus/heat. Pyometras (uterine infections) can occur and be fatal in female dogs, but this typically occurs 2-3 weeks after the conclusion of the heat cycle. Without a necropsy (essentially an autopsy for animals), it is impossible to determine her precise cause of death. Again, I'm deeply sorry for your loss.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I am so sorry for the tragic lose of your dog Luna! What a terrible thing for you and her have to go through! Sadly I can't speak on behalf of what did or didn't happen at your Vet. A spay is a MAJOR abdominal surgery. The dog needs to be strictly exercise restricted at home for 10-14 days, this means no running, jumping, no playing with other dogs, leash walks only. If they exercise too much the internal stitches can fall apart and allow the internal organs to come out. Also the dog should wear an E-collar or a T-shirt to prevent chewing and/or licking of the incision as the dog can chew it open and cause the dame thing. They should also be kept indoors for the recovery period as well. Despite the tragedy of this situation, you should calmly speak to your vet about your interpretation of the what was or wasn't said at discharge after surgery and what can be done to better improve communication with post surgical patients. You constructive criticism may be able to prevent this from happening to someone else. Again I am so sorry for your loss. I hope this helps in some way.

Hello. I am so sorry for the loss of your pet. It is just so difficult to say what went wrong. I would doubt it was the sedation, although there are better sedation protocols available that do not result in a pet sleeping so long afterwards. Perhaps you are in an outlying area where newer medications are not readily available. It is still possible that there was some injury that was just too awful for your pet to overcome. Many years ago, I attended to a dog injured in a fight where all the wounds seemed very superficial. Sedation to clean & treat the wounds went very well, the dog awoke promptly after we tuned off the anesthetic gas, yet the dog was found dead the next morning after doing quite well all day. Without a necropsy, it is impossible to say what happened. Best guess is a possible blood clot that broke loose & lodged in the brain or one of the vessels of the heart.
