What causes dark skin between my chihuahua's legs? Is it serious?

Hello, my name is Dr. Shines and I am happy to help. If Pico isn't itching or licking the area, if the skin's not red or scabby and if the fur looks normal, this is probably normal. As they age, the skin can darken, particularly in the groin and armpits. If Pico seems to be scratching or licking more, or if you sees signs of infection, then make an appointment to have him examined. Allergies can cause the skin to darker as well. Skin darkening can occur due to natural aging, low level irritation from infection or allergies, a healed wound or changes in hormone levels from hypothyroidism. Based on your picture I think this looks like normal pigment, however sometimes dogs can start to get darker skin where they had a dermatitis that is resolving or a chronic skin issue. If the red spots are new or Jaxon seems itchy I would recommend taking him to your veterinarian to have them examine his skin.

This looks like simple hyperpigmentation but of course I cannot say for sure without an exam. I would watch it closely. If it is changing or bothering her I would have your vet look at it. If you are unsure, you could have your vet take a look at it just to ensure it is nothing to worry about. the darkening of the skin can be just normal age development or secondary to an old infection or inflammation. It is impossible to tell only from a photograph however if this is normal pigment. She would need to be assessed by a veterinarian with a physical exam to determine if there is cause for concern.
