My dog has a dark, growing mark on her eyelid. Does it need removal?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

My 4.5 year old female vizsla has a dark, flat mark on her bottom eyelid that has grown in size over the past few months. What is it and Do I need to get it removed? She also happened to have a wart like growth under her chin 2 moths ago that I was able to remove with Dr. Scholl’s Freeze away wary remover.

I would recommend to have this checked out by her vet who may recommend removal. Melanomas are not super common in dogs but they can present as a dark colored mass. That being said, just because a growth is dark colored does not mean its a melanoma. The doctor may also recommend to aspirate the mass first (if possible pending consistency of mass and pet temperament) to look at the cells and determine the origin of the mass. I hope this helps and thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
