My dog has an elbow bump. Should I keep using peroxide and bag balm?

It is not uncommon for larger breeds to develop elbow callouses. Monitor for any licking or chewing of the spots. An e-collar (cone) can be used if necessary to stop licking. Provide a padded bed or beds for him to lay down. Consider adding an essential fatty acid supplement, such as DermCaps or EicosaCaps, to his diet. These may promote healthy skin and coat.

That could be an infection or area of irritation. You could have him examined which would give you a better idea of the cause. You could also watch it for a week and see what happens. Protect the area from licking or rubbing. Keep it clean and dry. You may apply a tiny dab of organic coconut oil once a day to moisturize it. It can get bigger or even irritated, but there isn't much we can do for it other than providing a soft place to lay rather than the hard floor. Hello, elbow & hock calluses, or hygromas, are common on most large breed dogs, regardless if they spend their time on a couch or concrete. There is very little muscle under the skin in these areas, so the skin is easily damaged. Often with time, the skin toughens up & no longer become easily damaged. In the meantime, Koba may need antibiotics, or gentle cleansing of the area with an antibacterial wipe, such as Hibiclens. This is likely to resolve on its own as long as you prevent any further self-trauma (preventing her from licking at it for example). You can get an e-collar from your local pet store or simply just keep a very close eye on her to prevent further self-trauma. In most cases of mild infections, if this is done at home, they can resolve as long as you keep that area clean. Your vet may recommend oral antibiotic therapy for a few weeks, and I would definitely advocate weekly (or twice weekly) bathing with a chlorhexidine-based shampoo. Leave the shampoo on for 10 minutes and then rinse with lukewarm water. Does Rosco use a harness that may be irritating the stomach and elbows? Another possibility is an underlying allergy that is causing a secondary bacterial infection on the skin. If the skin is itchy, your vet may also recommend anti-inflammatory medications to help relieve the discomfort and help the skin to heal faster.
