My dog has snorting coughs. Is it reverse sneezing? When to see a vet?

Hi, thanks for using Petcoach! Sounds like a scary moment with Abby! I am wondering if Abby had an episode of reverse sneezing. It is a very loud sucking in sound through the nose and their face has a pained grimaced look. It can be quite scary. Causes for revere sneezing are allergies, foreign body in the nose, an infection, or just a tickle one time thing. Some breeds have the episodes more often, I see it in a lot of Beagles. No. It is not serious as long as you are sure that is what the actual issue is. I would suggest if it happens again try to video tape the episode with your phone and just drop by the vet's office, show the video to them and ask if they think it is reverse sneezing. Dogs can sneeze two different ways. This sounds a lot scarier than it is and can usually be treated well with oral medications, though extreme cases may require surgery. Sometimes coughs and snorts can be underlying signs of chronic bronchitis or heart disease as well. Usually in more serious disease, we are seeing the signs associated with the animal not feeling well for days at a time, instead of just a single cough incident though. I would recommend trying to take a video the next time she makes the sound and seeing if there are any common triggers for it. That information would help your vet give you the best answer as to what is going on.

If he continues to do so it would be a good idea to get him checked. Reverse sneezing is usually meant to clear the nasal passages of irritants so if he can't clear what is bothering him it may mean he has something else going on that induces these sneezing episodes. Pay attention when he does it to see if there is something in common with each incident that may be causing or contributing to the reverse sneezing that you can pass along to your vet, even video it if you get the chance.

Coughs and reverse sneezes are not one in the same. Reverberate sneezes are not usually pathogenic but a cough usually indicates a problem. Cough in dogs can be with primarily respiratory or cardiac in nature. The first step to treating the cough is determine where the problem is originating. Coughs that are primarily respiratory in nature can be due to infectious causes (like lung worms, or bacterial, viral, or fungal infections) or due to airway disease (like asthma or a collapsing trachea). Coughs that are due to cardiac (heart) issues include things like pulmonary edema (fluid in the lungs) and heartworm disease. My best recommendation is for you to take Box in to your vet to be checked out. Usually a physical exam performed by your vet can distinguish between the two causes. Sometimes X-rays are also needed. Poor Charlie! Look up a YouTube video of a “reverse sneeze” to see if this is what he is doing. If so, this is nothing to worry about and you can Help him stop by rubbing him from head to tail. Sometimes Benadryl on a regular basis will help decrease the frequency. See link below. If this isn’t what he is doing then I would have your vet look at him. With him being so young, he could have a viral infection or an upper respiratory infection which needs to be treated. If left untreated he could get worse.
