Why is my dog crying and licking his anus? Is it an emergency?

If there is bloody diarrhea then I would take him to the ER clinic tonight. If it is diarrhea and he is otherwise acting fine still with no vomiting, then you can check on him through the night to make sure nothing is changing and have him checked in the morning. If there is vomiting or lethargy or he does not eat or drink then I would take him tonight also. You can always try boiled chicken and rice to help with digestion also as this is bland and easy to break down and can help with loose stool

Ouch, poor Luna! Based on the pictures you provided (thank you for that!), they do not look overly red, swollen, and there are no signs of blood. As long as she is eating and drinking normally, going to the bathroom normally, and otherwise behaving normally, she can wait until the morning to see the vet. I would put an Ecollar on her to prevent her from licking at her anus, and you can make one at home. I will put a link below on how to do that. If she is in a lot of pain, isn't eating, is lethargic, and/or is having trouble going to the bathroom, then I would take her into a vet now. Your dog may have an injury in his anus or rectum, or a polyp or he may have an impacted anal gland. I strongly recommend you take him to your veterinarian as an impacted or infected anal gland is very painful and needs to be evacuated, or lanced and flushed. Please take Loki to a veterinarian ASAP.

Poor guy. The only thing you can do at home here is to cleanse the area antiseptablly with Betadine diluted 50:50 with warm water or Chlorhexidine solution 3 or 4% diluted until a light blue mixture. If there is a lot of hair there, you can also gently cut away the hair to prevent further fecal matter to get stuck. If the area looks severely swollen, painful, or infected, then the best thing to do moving forward would be to get him seen and treated by your vet. It sounds like he is ingesting a lot of hair, so it would be wise to remove the source of his ingestion and either have him groomed more frequently and/or brushed at home more frequently to limit how much he is ingesting. If he still can't poop on his own, then yes he should see a vet to get an enema and remove all the stuck feces that are in his colon and provide him some relief. Red’s anus does look irritated and I can see some redness on the underside of his tail as well. He might be licking due to irritation from full anal glands, parasites or allergies. I would recommend having your vet examine him and check his anal glands. They may want to check a stool sample as well. Oral or topical medications might help. I would recommend putting an e-collar on to prevent licking until you can get to the vet.

If he’s otherwise normal you should be fine watching him tonight. He could have a ruptured anal abscess, or be passing a bone. He could also have a mass inside the rectum. Severe bloody diarrhea in a dog that is lethargic and not eating is a medical emergency but this sounds like he’s stable so bring him to your regular veterinarian in the morning so they can diagnose and treat his problem. I am sorry to hear about Mario. If his energy level has been normal today and he is not vomiting, and has been eating and drinking, and he is able to relax and go to sleep then he can probably wait until the morning. If, however, he has been vomiting, is lethargic, or he is unable to rest then you may consider a trip to the emergency vet.
