My dog's anal gland ruptured. Is it an emergency or can I wait?

Pet's info: Dog | Beagle | Female | spayed | 1 year and 8 months old | 30.25 lbs

If my dogs anal glands rupture can she wait until morning to see a vet? Or does she need to be seen immediately?

Ouch, poor Luna! Based on the pictures you provided (thank you for that!), they do not look overly red, swollen, and there are no signs of blood. As long as she is eating and drinking normally, going to the bathroom normally, and otherwise behaving normally, she can wait until the morning to see the vet. I would put an Ecollar on her to prevent her from licking at her anus, and you can make one at home. I will put a link below on how to do that. If she is in a lot of pain, isn't eating, is lethargic, and/or is having trouble going to the bathroom, then I would take her into a vet now. Good luck, I hope this helps!

It depends on how comfortable your dog is. If he is constantly scooting or licking the area and seems painful, then he will likely need to be seen before Monday. If the draining has stopped and he is able to comfortably rest and go to the bathroom, then you can try to wait to Monday and monitor for any changes.

I suggest you find another veterinarian who can accommodate you. It would be best to have the ruptured anal sac flushed and then an antibiotic ointment instilled. Now that it is ruptured it will not hurt anymore. You can cut away all the hair near it to keep it clean. And try to either ask your vet to accommodate you as this is an acute matter and needs to be seen now, or try to be seen by another vet.

Poor Rusty. If there is a lot of blood and pus, and he appears to be in pain, then I would take him into an ER vet now. Otherwise, it can wait until the morning. If you wait, put an Ecollar on him to keep him from licking it. You can make one at home:

If she is incredibly uncomfortable I would advise taking her tonight. But if she is able to rest, doesn't seem to be in too much pain, I think you can wait until tomorrow to get it assessed. The fact that it ruptured is a good thing, it's probably less painful although a little more messy to deal with. Your vet will probably make sure both anal glands are emptied, advise topical wound treatment, give some antibiotics, anti inflammatories, pain meds, E collar, etc. Keep placing neosporin right on and even in the wound. Put a cone on her to keep her from licking it tonight. If you don't have one, you can make one at home and I will put a link below on how to do it. Keep her warm and comfortable, and put some old sheets on where she sleeps so her normal bedding doesn't get dirty from the leaking. Get her into a vet first thing in the morning. Hi, sorry I could not see any pictures attached to your question. In general an anal gland abscess, wether is has ruptured or not, does not warrant a visit in the middle of the night. If Cleo is reasonably bright, it can wait until the morning. I would definitely recommend a check up though as it can be quite painful ! I would put an e collar to prevent Cloe to lick/groom the area.

Poor Buddy! An anal gland infection is not normally an emergency, so if he's acting normal otherwise (eating and drinking, active, etc.) it should be okay to wait until Monday to take him to the vet. If he seems excessively painful in this area, or if he is having any other symptoms such as acting lethargic or not wanting to eat, it would be best to take him to an emergency vet over the weekend since these can be signs of a more serious problem.

My dog has a painful lump. Is it an emergency or can it wait?

I think this is not an emergency and can wait to be seen tomorrow. The only thing that may happen is that this abscess bursts until then. If that happens, gently wipe off the pus, do not flush or put ointment on the wound, leave it as it is. It is likely painful at the moment, but once the abscess bursts the pain will be over. Your vet will lance and flush the abscess and prescribe an antibiotic if needed.

My dog's anal gland ruptured. Can it heal at home without a vet?

Don't panic! Yes this will heal on its own. What I recommend you do is make a warm epsom salt solution and soak her little bum in the solution several times daily until the swelling goes down. She is small enough that you could put a 1/4 c of epsom salt in a kitchen sink-sized basin and have her sit in this until the water cools. This does a great job of healing the hole and drawing out the infection and swelling.

My dog has a painful anal gland abscess. Does he need a vet now?

Hello. You are correct that Tucker probably is in some pain. Having him seen sooner would certainly allow us to start him on some pain medications. He also would be started on antibiotics. However, if you cannot have him seen now , sometimes sitting them in warm water with some Epsom salts is very soothing and will allow the abscess to go ahead and rupture. This will cause some bleeding and you may see some discharge, but he should feel better at the same time. I think you should have him seen as soon as possible, but I would not wait until Monday.
