Why is my dog crying so much lately, even after walks? What's wrong?

The most likely reason Bomba is crying is because he is in pain. He should be examined by the vet to determine what the problem is. It could be from an accident or some medical condition. Poor girl. I am not sure if this strictly behavioral due to old age and a bit of senility or if she has an underlying issue. It would be worth while getting her examined by your vet to have a health profile done via bloodwork to ensure everything is normal, especially since this behavior is happening in consecutive days. If she is having senility issues, then that can be addressed with medication (i.e. Reconcile) or with a prescription diet (ie Hill’s B/D). Another possible cause for sudden whimpering in older pets is arthritis. This can be helped with joint supplements (ie Dasuquin, Cosequin, Rejuvenate) in mild cases or prescription pain control medication (ie Rimadyl, Galliprant) through your vet in more moderate to severe cases. If he is still eating and drinking well, and not having any other issues then it could be that he has arthritis and that is causing some pain or discomfort. Try to keep a journal of when he is crying/whining including time of day, as well as what he did that day (did he have a big walk, was he outside or inside all day, did he do a lot of stairs that day, what food did he eat that day, did he get a lot of treats that day, etc) This will help determine what the problem is. Just because you were unable to elicit a pain response from Chapman does not necessarily mean he isn't uncomfortable or painful somewhere in the body. I am glad to hear that he seems generally happy and healthy right now and is doing his normal thing. If this continues, you can certainly monitor at home for any other negative symptoms. If the crying or whining continues with consistency for more than a day I would definitely get him checked to make sure nothing serious is going on. Hope this makes sense.

If only Milo could talk! This type of behavior could be related to something like anxiety or to pain/discomfort. I recommend to have him examined by the veterinarian who will check for evidence of pain on the physical exam. Many times this type of sudden pain is related to intervertebral disc disease, discospondylitis, upper abdominal pain or a pinched nerve. It is probably attention seeking behavior. I suggest you ignore it when he does that as to not reinforce the behavior. If no change after you have done that for a week or so then I suggest you get him to the vet for a check up to rule out any underlying medical problem.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! This is possibly neck or back pain. It could still be pain associated with a leg even if nothing seems wrong with them. I recommend that you have Chico evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Likely diagnostics include radiographs. Treatment would be based on findings. At the very least they can prescribe pain control medications to make Chico feel better. In the meantime, reduce his activity as much as possible as that in itself can make a big difference.
