Why is my healthy 10-year-old dog suddenly whining and crying?

Poor girl. I am not sure if this strictly behavioral due to old age and a bit of senility or if she has an underlying issue. It would be worth while getting her examined by your vet to have a health profile done via bloodwork to ensure everything is normal, especially since this behavior is happening in consecutive days. If she is having senility issues, then that can be addressed with medication (i.e. Reconcile) or with a prescription diet (ie Hill’s B/D). Another possible cause for sudden whimpering in older pets is arthritis. This can be helped with joint supplements (ie Dasuquin, Cosequin, Rejuvenate) in mild cases or prescription pain control medication (ie Rimadyl, Galliprant) through your vet in more moderate to severe cases. If he is truly 17 years old then this could be due to cognitive disorder which is similar to dementia. There isn't much you can do about this but you could try to put him on anipryl which can sometimes help but the meds are expensive. If he is younger like it looks in the pictures, this could be from several things like a new anxiety (construction workers, storms, change in his owner(s) routine, etc), pain somewhere, and more. I would have your vet do a thorough exam on him. If everything looks normal, I would talk to him about anti-anxiety meds if needed. Some natural things to try is a calming collar like adaptil and calming chews like vetriscience composure or the stronger prescription version composure pro. I hope this helps!

There are a wide variety of health problems that can cause shaking/crying and decreased appetite. Pain or discomfort from a number of health problems could cause the shaking and crying. Decreased appetite may be due to pain or can be due to nausea from any number of health issues such as orthopedic conditions, organ dysfunction, infections, autoimmune diseases, toxins, or certain types of cancers. Due to the variety of possibilities in this case, I would highly recommend Fido be seen by his veterinarian right away for an evaluation. Your question unfortunately got cut off but I have a few ideas based on what I can read. It is possible this is an arthritis flare up or some other painful event (spinal stroke, Embolism, slipped disk, or other). It is also possible he is recovering from a seizure- which can result in abnormal Behavior for up to a day. There are also neurological diseases and infectious diseases that can cause weakness and odd behavior. Take Casper to your local vet who can likely help narrow down the problem with a good physical and neurological exam and can prescribe pain medication if needed.

Just because you were unable to elicit a pain response from Chapman does not necessarily mean he isn't uncomfortable or painful somewhere in the body. I am glad to hear that he seems generally happy and healthy right now and is doing his normal thing. If this continues, you can certainly monitor at home for any other negative symptoms. If the crying or whining continues with consistency for more than a day I would definitely get him checked to make sure nothing serious is going on. Hope this makes sense.

Unless you are certain this isn't the case, I think Steve should get a physical exam performed by your veterinarian to determine if they can find anything wrong. At 7 years, some vets will also begin recommended annual blood work to make sure there is nothing potentially laying in wait. If you are certain that Steve is fine and you feel this is a behavior problem, the best way to avoid this is to vehemently refuse to give in to Steve's whining, and only reward him when he stops. If you discover that the whining is purely behavioral, the use of a training clicker might be useful in making matters easier and more understandable for him. The behavior changes you describe could be a sign of pain somewhere or a number of other problems - sometimes it’s difficult to say what might be wrong when signs are relatively vague. Abnormal behavior and whining does not necessarily sound like an urgent problem to me unless he is showing other signs of illness as well. If you are very concerned or if Herbie has had other symptoms like vomiting, diarrhea, decreased appetite, coughing or a change in urination you could see if you can move up your appointment with your vet.
