My dog has a sudden crusty bump on her nose. When should I see a vet?

Hello, thank you for your question about Bailey. Based oh the photo that you have provided I suspect that those bumps are hives and signs that Bailey is having an allergic reaction. If the reaction is mild and these are the only signs that you are seeing you could try giving her Benadryl at home to control the reaction. If she is showing any other symptoms such as vomiting, diarrhea, or progressive facial swelling I would recommend having her evaluated by a veterinarian. Hope this helps, good luck!

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! There are many reason for why Bailey's nose may be changing and thickening. Some possibilities are hyperkaratosis, an immune condition or even an infection. Treatment of all of these things are different. Some over the counter options are Snout smoother for hyperkaratosis or vitamin E or an a and D ointment or a mild immune issue. If her nose worsens or doesn't improve she should be seen by your vet. It's a bit hard to see the lump, but it looks like it's around Bailey's whisker. It could be from an infection of the hair follicle or it could be due to an injury. I would take her into a vet tomorrow. The vet can diagnose what is causing it, and can treat it. Best of luck.

Hi there. I'm so sorry to hear about Echo's troubles. In some cases, a lesion like that on the nose can just be from coming in contact with an irritant that could've just bothered the skin there. The irritant could've caused Echo to rub her nose on a surface and cause that lesion to appear. A staph infection can also develop around the area. Other things I look into if the lesion doesn't go away, starts to spread, or gets worse, are autoimmune diseases of the skin. I would advise just spot cleaning the area with some mild soap and water, like dial gold hand soap twice per day for a few days or some vetericyn wound spray. Creams or lotions will likely just be licked off, so I'd avoid using those. If it's not getting better in 3-5 days, I'd have Echo examined by her veterinarian to insure she doesn't need any diagonstic skin tests, or prescription medications to help the lesion resolve. This could be a cyst from an impacted hair follicle from when she was rubbing her nose in daycare. I would monitor this for the next 2-3 weeks and if it does not resolve, I would have a veterinarian examine it so that the most appropriate diagnostic and treatment recommendations can be made. Certainly if it worsens during the next 2-3 weeks I would have this seen sooner. I hope this helps! She could have hit her nose on something and the bump is related to trauma and will go away, it could be a benign growth (like a histiocytoma), it could be part of a skin infection or immune reaction, hives or a cancerous growth. If the bump doesn't resolve in a few days I recommend having your Vet look at it. The sores around her mouth can also be due to infection or an immune condition and may or may not be related to the new bump on her nose. I hope this helps and I wish Luna a speedy recovery!

It is hard to tell from the photo the characteristics of this bump. I would say it is possible it is related to trauma and I would monitor for now but it could also be a tumor (either benign or malignant). My recommendation would be to monitor it for the next 24 to 48 hours, and if it is still there in the same size or it is bigger I would have a veterinarian examin the area.
