Why does my dog cry from pain under his armpit when he jumps?

My dog has a pain under his arm , like where his armpit is , it hurts him when I touch it or when he jumps off the couch or a bed he cries.

Hello, and thank you for your question. It may be that Rocky has an injury of his front leg, such as a soft tissue injury (sprain), dislocation, or fracture. The armpit is also where some lymph nodes are located, and swelling of these lymph nodes may also cause pain, which is indicative of inflammation or infection.

I would try to ensure strict rest for the next 24 hours (no running, jumping, or rough housing). If his pain persists after this time, or if he exhibits any lethargy or loss of appetite, I would recommend taking him to the vet for a full checkup. They can investigate for a possible leg injury, check for swollen lymph nodes, and check for infection. X-rays or blood tests may be recommended to further pinpoint the cause.

I am sorry Rocky is having such a hard time. It is very hard to say what is going on with Rocky without examining him first. However, crying when trying to move is a serious sign of pain and obvious discomfort. Joint pain from arthritis, abdominal pain, a fracture of the limb could be the source of the pain, although it is hard to say sigh unseen.

My best advice for you and is to take Rocky to an emergency veterinary clinic right away so they can be assess what the cause of the pain may be and treat him quickly.

Hello, sorry to hear about Rocky. It sounds like he could have back or neck pain. Other signs may include walking very gingerly, carrying his head low, avoiding stairs and not moving onto furniture, and yelping/crying when being picked up. You should rest Rocky until he can be seen by his veterinarian. This is done by keeping him restricted in his crate, not allowing him to jump or use stairs, carrying him to go to the bathroom but then bringing him back in and do not allow him to run or play outdoors. Use a harness in the meantime and avoid neck leashes. Hope this helps and best of luck.

My dog yelped when picked up under armpits. Why is she in pain?

It could be a muscular injury or sprain. I would leave the area alone and monitor for the next few hours, if she seems to be in discomfort best to have her checked over so can get some pain relief . If she is already in quite a bit of pain best to have her checked over sooner rather than later.

Why does my dog not like his lower back touched? Could it be pain?

I am not sure how old your pet is but if there are no external punctures or rashes to be found, then it is possible that his bones are the source of pain. Arthritis is the number one reason for pain in the lower back and hip area. Also the armpit area is the shoulder, which is another source of arthritic pain. If he is a younger dog than some inflammation of the bone is possible (i.e. Hypertrophic Osteopathy or Hypertrophic Osetodystrophy, Degenerative joint disease). All of these conditions are diagnosed with a radiograph that your vet can perform in the hospital. If your pet is older you can try some joint supplements to see if this makes a difference. My top brands are Dasuquin and Cosequin.

My dog limps and yelps when jumping. Why does his front leg hurt?

Hi there! Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! This can happen from many reasons that go all the way from a muscle sprain to even cancer. I recommend that you have TJ evaluated by your veterinarian for further tests and assessment. Your veterinarian would be able to localize the pain and proceed with radiographs for example to look for any possible changes that could help rule out or in some of these conditions. Treatment would be based on findings but at the very least, your veterinarian could start TJ on medications for pain to make him feel better. Good luck! Hoping for a speedy recovery!

My dog yelps when jumping or playing. Could it be back pain?

Poor Cooper! From your description, my main concern is that Cooper may be experiencing some mild neck and/or back pain that flares up intermittently. At this point, I do recommend taking Cooper back to his vet for a repeat exam. Some dogs can be extremely stoic, even while experiencing pain, as a defense mechanism. Your vet will be able to thoroughly evaluate Cooper's back and neck to determine if he is showing any sign of discomfort and prescribe pain medication if necessary. Until you can take him to the vet, confine Cooper to a large crate or small room to prevent him from running, jumping or playing, as this can exacerbate any back injury or pain. Why is my dog yelping suddenly when I pick him up or touch his chest?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Blue! Common causes of pain when small dogs are picked up are: neck and back pain for forelimb pain. If this is new and he is also jumping up less, shivering or tremoring and not using the stairs I would take him in to the Vet this week for an exam as that indicates pain. Other reasons for crying when picked up is arthritis or being scared or surprised. So try to go slowly and gently if he is otherwise acting normal. Good luck!

Why is my dog screaming when I touch his ribs or chest area?

Poor Pipi!! I wonder if he may have injured his ribs or even injured his spine around his chest area. Poodles can have fine ribs, so if he fell he may have fractured one. Jumping on or off furniture or stairs can also strain the muscles that run along the spine (epaxial muscles) causing a very sore back. It is also important to check there are no injuries to his skin - an insect bite or sting may cause sudden pain. Given the severity of his crying, I would suggest you take him to the nearest emergency vet for an exam, so that they can identify the location and cause of his pain. Please do not give Pipi any human pain medicines, as many can be toxic to dogs even in small amounts. I hope he recovers very soon.
