My dog limps and yelps when jumping. Why does his front leg hurt?

This can be due to conditions such as a soft tissue injury, ligament conditions, a fracture and even a tumor. For this reason, I recommend that you have Jo evaluated by a veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. A veterinarian should be able to perform an examination and localize where the pain is so that further diagnostics like radiographs can be performed. Treatment will be highly dependent on what is causing the lameness. At the very least your veterinarian can start Jo on pain control medications to provide comfort. Certain conditions such as Lyme disease and autoimmune conditions can cause occasional limping, as you described. Your vet can perform x-rays and blood work to rule out the conditions above. HI, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Baby! I am assuming Baby is limping? Causes of limping really depends on whether it is a front or hind leg. It could be just a strain or sprain but it could also be Lyme disease, ACL tear and many other things. If he is acting lethargic and not eating he should see a Vet today. If he is otherwise fine then rest him and see how he is by Monday. If by Monday he is still limping then he should be seen by your Vet. I do not recommend giving Baby any human medications. He is definitely hurting somewhere or he wouldn't be yelping. Have you ever hurt your neck and it only is sore when you turn it a certain way? It's the same with dogs. When he turns/jumps a certain way he is feeling pain in some location. I suggest you get him to your vet for an exam. They will at the very least be able to dispense some anti-inflammatories/pain medication for Ares to make him feel better.

The best thing to do it limit his activity because continued use will not allow a strain or sprain to heal. So no running, jumping, no stairs or jumping on/off the furniture and leash walks only for at least 7 days. If the limp doesn't improve with in those 7 days Shadow should be seen by a Vet or sooner if it worsens. It is not wrong to have Shadow seen sooner than later as well. Do not give any human pain medications, dogs do not metabolize drugs like people do and they may interfere with medications your Vet may want to prescribe. His pain can be caused by many things, but to determine which are to blame, he needs to be examined by a veterinarian. You're right that trauma could cause this, however it is important to localize where the trauma is. A vet can do this by doing an orthopedic exam, which basically manipulates all the joints and bones to see if there is any disease. His pain can also be due to back issues, which would need X-rays to diagnose, or even arthritis. It is also important to rule out infectious (bacterial) causes of pain or any other underlying disease that Buddy may have. To keep him comfortable before he is seen by a vet, you can try to limit Buddy's activity - minimize his using the stairs, walking/running, and playing. I hope this is helpful!
