I am not sure how old your pet is but if there are no external punctures or rashes to be found, then it is possible that his bones are the source of pain. Arthritis is the number one reason for pain in the lower back and hip area. Also the armpit area is the shoulder, which is another source of arthritic pain.

If he is a younger dog than some inflammation of the bone is possible (i.e. Hypertrophic Osteopathy or Hypertrophic Osetodystrophy, Degenerative joint disease). All of these conditions are diagnosed with a radiograph that your vet can perform in the hospital.

If your pet is older you can try some joint supplements to see if this makes a difference. My top brands are Dasuquin and Cosequin.

You do not mention an age or breed but spinal pain and arthritis would be a common cause of these signs. I strongly recommend a full physical exam to identify the focus of his pain, acupuncture and chiropractic care can also help if no medical reasons are identified

Your dog may in pain. He could have a problem with his spine, such as arthritis or a slipped disc, causing him this pain. Arthritis is common in old dogs, while a slipped disc would be common in a dog with a long spine, such as a dachshund. It would be wise to take him into your vet for an exam. Your vet can take x-rays to see if there is a problem with his spine, and can diagnose what exactly is causing the pain. Your dog may benefit from pain meds and supplements such as glucosamine or chondroitin sulfate if he does suffer from arthritis.

He may have arthritis in his spine that is causing the issue. You should have him examined by a vet in person so that they can help you figure out what is going on. Flinching and shaking means he is in pain so it would be best to get him some help.

My 10-year-old dog yelps when touched on back. Is it arthritis?

I would be concerned that Max is suffering from arthritis. Sometimes like with people a patient will act completely normal and than after exercise like a walk be painful. I would recommend restricted activity for 4-5 days and see how he feels. If he is still painful I would take him to a vet for an x-ray of his back and possible starting pain medications. You can try an over the counter glucosamine and chondroitin supplement with helps with joint inflammation and arthritis formation.

Why is my senior dog sensitive to touch on her back and limping?

At 15 years old she could definitely have a medical issue going on. I suspect she may have some arthritis in her spine and hips/back legs which is why she is seeming sensitive on her back and limping on the hind limbs. I suggest you take her to your vet for an exam and to get some medication to help with the arthritis (if that is what is going on). We cannot diagnose over the internet of course I cannot tell you 100% for sure what is going on without examining her myself. IF he is whining this is an indication he is in pain but there are many possible injuries, infections or accidents which could cause it. A full check up and possibly xrays is recommended if it persists beyond 12hours and your vet can prescribe appropriate pain relief and treatment once the cause has been identified. Why is my dog suddenly slow and whimpering when I pick him up?

Hello, The first thing that comes to my mind is chronic back, neck, or shoulder pain. Dogs with pain in these areas often hesitate to use stairs or jump on and off furniture. They may also want to lay around more and be generally less active. Pain in dogs can be similar to humans in that in can be caused by things like arthritis, disc disease, or a pinched nerve. It can also flare up and be worse at some times than at others, which may be why he vocalizes at some times and not at others. Anti-inflammatory drugs (a common one is carprofen) and nerve pain drugs (a common one is gabapentin) are commonly used to treat these conditions. I recommend that you take your pet to your local veterinarian for an examination and blood work. There are numerous reasons an animal may have pain in the lower part of her body, including kidney infection/stones, degenerative disc disease, spains/strains, osteoarthritis, or trauma, etc. Often, lack of eating is a sign of pain or distress. Once your pet's source of pain/discomfort is diagnosed and treated, you pet will be more likely to eat again.
