Why is my dog screaming when I touch his ribs or chest area?

Poor Peanut! Pain like this can be caused by a fracture, bone or joint infection, or nerve damage. I recommend having Peanut seen by a vet as soon as possible - they may recommend x-rays to determine the cause of the pain. In the meantime, you should keep Peanut as calm as possible to prevent further trauma. I hope all is well with Peanut!

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Blue! Common causes of pain when small dogs are picked up are: neck and back pain for forelimb pain. If this is new and he is also jumping up less, shivering or tremoring and not using the stairs I would take him in to the Vet this week for an exam as that indicates pain. Other reasons for crying when picked up is arthritis or being scared or surprised. So try to go slowly and gently if he is otherwise acting normal. Good luck!

I'm sorry Task is in pain! It's certainly not normal that he's crying out in pain when you touch the top of his sternum, and it's concerning he's screaming when you press more. I wouldn't say he's being a baby about it, it sounds like to me he is in true pain. I would stop pressing on that area, and have him seen by a vet tomorrow. The vet can diagnose what is causing the pain and how best to treat it. The vet can also prescribe pain medication if needed. Please do not give him any human pain medications, as many are toxic to dogs and can be fatal if given. I hope this helps!

I recommend to have Vlekkie examined by the veterinarian if this behavior is consistent. Its possible this is an indication that an internal organ is hurting (which is unusual) or that he could have arthritis in his back or a painful rib. He needs a physical exam to begin figuring out what is wrong. I hope this helps.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! This is possibly neck or back pain. It could still be pain associated with a leg even if nothing seems wrong with them. I recommend that you have Piper evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Likely diagnostics include radiographs. Treatment would be based on findings. At the very least they can prescribe pain control medications to make Piper feel better. In the meantime, reduce her activity as much as possible as that in itself can make a big difference. Poor Baby! It definitely sounds like she's painful somewhere. In my experience, the most common cause of yelping or yipping when touched or petted is back pain, often due to a herniated disc - this is a fairly common problem in dogs. She could also be painful due to some other injury to her legs or back. I would recommend having her examined by a vet as soon as you are able to - he/she can do a thorough exam to help localize the source of the pain, and may also do x-rays if needed to help diagnose the problem.

Thank you for more information on Shaggy's current symptoms. Squeaking in pain when jumping down from the couch can indicate a problem with his spine, neck, hips, or legs. He could be in pain when laying down, such as joint pain, again causing him to squeak. Because he is making painful noises when jumping, I would be more inclined to think it's a problem with his musculoskeletal system rather than his stomach or GI system. I would rest him tonight, no running, jumping, or playing. Take Shaggy out to toilet on a lead only and bring him right back in when he's done. Tomorrow morning, I would have him seen by a vet to diagnose what is causing him pain so he can be treated. Please do not give him any human pain medications as many are toxic to dogs and can be fatal if given. The vet can give him pain medications as needed.
