Is a dog crate good for my small dog's safety from kids and comfort?

Bella is possibly seeking warmth, comfort and darkness in the closet. Provided this is safe place for her and you are comfortable with it, I do not see a problem with her sleeping there. Regarding the crates, my personal preference is for plastic crates for a dog of Bella's size. The most important thing in choosing a crate is to make sure that it is large enough for her to stand up and turn around.

So a crate should be big enough for them to stand up and turn around. It is usually a pretty tight turn but they can still turn around in it. If she can't turn around at all then yes, you need to get a bigger crate. If you are just worried she won't be comfortable then you can go up in size. Just keep in mind that in order to crate train a dog you don't want the crate to be too big. If it is too big, they will be tempted to pee/poop on one side and sleep on the other size. You are correct that she does need protecting from wild little children hurting her. I would have a talk with the children, and show them how to approach her calmly and how to touch her appropriately. Do not let children run up to Bella and pet her uninvited; rather, they should ask for permission to pet her first. If you notice she's becoming upset or distressed (ears back, tense body), then immediately remove her from the children.

I generally recommend crate training for bigger dogs for house training as it helps establish a routine and a safe space for them. Make sure the crate is big enough for him to stand up and turn around but not much bigger than that. Try to keep to a schedule in terms of taking him outside, feeding him, and putting him in the crate every day. Huskies can be kind of vocal so he may protest a little bit at first. Having the radio or TV on to provide some background noise may help make him feel less alone.
