My dog is coughing months after a tick bite. Is it chronic disease?

I am sorry to hear about Hunter. I would strongly recommend an examination by your veterinarian which should include x-rays of his chest. In any older dog that is coughing we definitely want to evaluate for more serious concerns such as heart disease or tumors. We can also have infectious causes of cough including fungal disease, or we can see chronic bronchitis. Your vet can prescribe icough suppressant's and any other medications needed.

I would Holiday examined by a vet, as it's not normal for a dog to breathe heavy without exercise. It could be a tick borne disease, but it could also be a respiratory illness, heartworm disease, or heart disease among other causes that are leading to her symptoms. Generally, tick-borne diseases cause non-specific signs such as fever, decreased appetite, swollen lymph nodes, and lethargy within the first 4 weeks after a tick bite. Dogs can get a skin infection or irritation from a tick bite - it is hard to tell exactly what they look like without a photo - but if you are concerned have your veterinarian take a look. And if you notice that he is not feeling well, take him to a vet right away. In the future definitely plan to use a veterinarian-approved tick product and check Hogan for ticks every time he comes inside.

There are several tick-borne diseases that could cause lethargy. These include lyme disease, rocky mountain spotted fever, ehrlichiciosis and anaplasmosis. If your dog is lethargic, a visit to your vet is recommended. They can perform a good physical exam and may recommend bloodwork including testing for these tick-borne diseases.
