Why is my pug coughing, sneezing, and drooling so much?

Pet's info: Dog | Pug | Male | unneutered | 22 lbs

My 2yr old pug has this cough/sneeze fits about 1-2 times day for the last week. Then 10 minutes later we notice his chin is covered with saliva. What should we do?

Hi there! So sorry to hear that Reuben is having this issue!

I think that any time a dog with a smushy face like a Pug or a Boston Terrier or a Bulldog (or a breed like that) is a having an issue with the respiratory system (coughing, sneezing, any kind of nasal discharge, problem breathing, etc) they should been seen by your veterinarian for an examination. These dogs are already compromised with breathing just because of their normal anatomy (smushy face) so anything can easily make them very sick. Even something that wouldn't make a dog without a smushy face sick.

Based on what you described he could have something easy going on like reverse sneezing or it could be something more severe like complications from an elongated soft palate or stenotic nares.

I wouldn't wait around too long to see what happens. It is better to be safe than sorry. I would have Reuben checked out to be sure there is nothing serious going on.

It sounds like she may have some inflammation that isn't usually present, Such a short respiratory tract makes pugs vulnerable to inhaled irritants and infections more so than other breeds of dog. I am sorry to hear about Bubu. I would recommend bringing him in to the vet for an examination (particularly because he is a pug so he already has a compromised respiratory system due to his conformation so it is best for any possible respiratory problem to be seen as soon as possible). This could be an issue with the respiratory tract such as kennel cough, or it could be a gastrointestinal issue. The vet will listen to his heart and lungs, palpate his throat, and may recommend x-rays based on their exam. It is not likely related to your family's illness as dogs do not normally catch human flu virus.

Why is my older pug suddenly reverse sneezing multiple times a day?

Bruce's reverse sneezing may be in response to many things including poor air quality (which is common in houses during the winter time), a mild infection, a tumor/polyp (less common) and yes, some times as pets age, these things can become more prevalent. If it continues or worsens, have him seen by his veterinarian who may prescribe an anti-inflammatory or even an antibiotic. At home you can continue your current care. Adding in an Omega 3 fatty acid supplement for dogs (you can find these online, at pet stores or at your vet's office) can also help the condition. Using an HEPA air filter may also be beneficial. My pug is sneezing a lot with discharge. Is it allergies or a cold?

The most common reasons for sneezing are: allergies, a cold, an infection (bacterial, viral or fungal) or possibly foreign material (plant debris, etc). Pugs have abnormal nares and airways which may make them more susceptible to infections. I am from the US and I see you are in Croatia. There may be different causes in your area of the world. If the nasal discharge is yellow or green, he gets worse, stops eating, is lethargic and or his symptoms persist I'd recommend getting him looked at by a Veterinarian. He may need some antibiotics

My dog has yellow nose discharge, sneezes, wheezes, and mouth breathing.

Oh no, poor Ruffus! From your picture, it looks like he is quite ill. I see significant discharge from his eye, and that mucus from his nose is quite thick. He could be suffering from a severe respiratory infection causing his symptoms. If he's breathing through his mouth, then it is likely because he is very congested. Ruffus could also have an eye infection causing the discharge, and any problem with the eye should be considered an emergency because it's such an important and delicate structure. He does need to see a vet immediately for these symptoms so he can be treated. Please take him into an ER vet clinic; if there isn't one in your area, there will be a vet on call for emergencies. The information to reach that vet is found on a clinic's answering machine or website.
