Why is my 6-week-old pug puppy coughing, honking, or squeaking?

Hi there! So sorry to hear that Reuben is having this issue! I think that any time a dog with a smushy face like a Pug or a Boston Terrier or a Bulldog (or a breed like that) is a having an issue with the respiratory system (coughing, sneezing, any kind of nasal discharge, problem breathing, etc) they should been seen by your veterinarian for an examination. These dogs are already compromised with breathing just because of their normal anatomy (smushy face) so anything can easily make them very sick. Even something that wouldn't make a dog without a smushy face sick. Based on what you described he could have something easy going on like reverse sneezing or it could be something more severe like complications from an elongated soft palate or stenotic nares. I wouldn't wait around too long to see what happens. It is better to be safe than sorry. I would have Reuben checked out to be sure there is nothing serious going on. I hope this helps. It's possible that Minnie may have contracted a virus called "Kennel Cough" or may be experiencing complications from have a shortened bronchial passage. You'll want to visit your local Veterinarian to rule out the presence of any infection or virus. Minnie may also be experiencing complications do to allergies. You'll want to monitor her for any discharge or drainage and let your doctor know about that as well.

In a youbg chihuahua thid noise could be a few things. It may be a hacking cough due to an infection such as kennel cough or it could be indicative of a physical problem such as a collapsing trachea or isdues with the soft palate/ epiglottis. As long as Hugo is breathing ok and seems bright you could hold off for tonight, but I would take him into the vet tomorrow for an exam to start getting to the bottom of this.

I would recommend bringing him in to the vet for an examination (particularly because he is a pug so he already has a compromised respiratory system due to his conformation so it is best for any possible respiratory problem to be seen as soon as possible). This could be an issue with the respiratory tract such as kennel cough, or it could be a gastrointestinal issue. The vet will listen to his heart and lungs, palpate his throat, and may recommend x-rays based on their exam. It is not likely related to your family's illness as dogs do not normally catch human flu virus.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Canelo! It is possible that he has kennel cough which can be cause by either a bacterial or viral infection. It is contagious between dogs. The cough sounds loud and goose honking. A lot of the time it is worse when they are resting, Sometimes they cough and gag up white phlegm. Most of the time kennel cough is self limiting and resolves in 2 weeks. But in young puppies some Vets like to start antibiotics to prevent pneumonia. Other causes for a cough is collapsing trachea which can be genetic in Pomeranians but is usually worse with excitement. I'd schedule an appointment with your Vet to have him looked at. Good luck!

If Ebony still has a respiratory infection, it is going to be even more difficult on her body because of her narrow nostrils, which may explain the difficulty breathing. This breed will typically have a hard time when dealing with a respiratory infection because they are unable to move air through their nostrils efficiently. I would recommend taking her in to be seen by a veterinarian and have chest x-rays performed to see if there are any abnormalities that need to be addressed or more infection that requires further antibiotic therapy.
