Dog coughing, clearing throat, scratching ears. Could it be allergies?

Yes he could have allergies since you recently moved, especially if it is hot and humid there. There are lots of bacteria, molds and inhalant allergies that can cause the symptoms you describe. Generally most dogs will adjust to the new environment over several months and not need treatment. If Duke gets worse with the itching or starts more gagging or coughing then I would bring him in for a exam. If Panda had something stuck in his throat, he wouldn't be eating because any object there would prevent him from swallowing. It could be that his allergies are causing him to cough, or he could be getting a respiratory infection. Keep an eye on him for the next couple of days, and if the cough continues, take him into the vet. Rest him to see if that helps with it. It could just be allergies, but that doesn't usually cause shortness of breath. Try to keep her calm and reduce activity. Keep the room cool and use a fan. If she still seems short of breath, she needs to be checked out by a vet ASAP.

It could be kennel cough, scratch in the throat from chewing on hard objects or swelling in the throat from being stung in the throat by an insect. As long as your dog is acting as normal, eating food and keeping it down you should monitor him at home. Kennel cough symptoms usually resolve within 7-10 days without treatment. However, if your dog continues to cough or becomes lethargic and off food, you should get him checked by your local vets.

The most likely causes are an infection or allergies. An object stuck in the nose is possible but typically tends to be one sided and will start to have greenish discharge. If they have both developed the same cough I would be concerned about viral causes and a potential kennel cough. I would discuss this with your veterinarian. The skin and ears can definitely be allergies. Benadryl is great for allergies and there are other antihistamines if this doesn't work. There are also other great options like cytopoint (an injectable medication for allergies) and apoquel (a daily pill for allergies).
