Why is my dog coughing, short of breath, and scratching a red eye?

If she is having difficulty breathing then she should be examined by a vet to determine the cause and treat. Your vet could take an X-ray to evaluate her heart and lungs. If she is scratching a lot then she may also have allergies and your vet can prescribe an antihistamine to treat. Also inspect her for fleas and uses a flea prevention , like NexGard, Bravecto, Frontline, etc.

I am sorry to hear about Bob. I would definitely recommend getting him to the vet as soon as possible. If he is having difficulty breathing tonight I would take him to an emergency vet. There are many possible causes of coughing. Allergies can occasionally cause a mild cough but we don't often see coughing as a result of allergies in pets (in pets allergies tend to manifest more as skin problems or sneezing) and in those cases the cough is more mild. We would worry about infections with bacteria or virus (including pneumonia in severe coughing), heartworm disease, heart disease, and lung tumors to name a few. Bob needs to have the vet examine him, listen to his heart and lungs, and most likely take x-rays of his lungs to check for changes to the heart and lungs. Allergies and throat/sinus irritation could definitely be a reason for coughing/throat clearing and scratching at the ears. You may also see red eyes or clear discharge from the nose or eyes as additional signs. However if the symptoms continue for more than a few days or don't improve it is also a good idea to have Simon looked at by your vet. Foreign objects stuck in the nose or sinuses, illness, respiratory disease and even growths may also cause similar symptoms so it's good to have them checked out.

Any breathing abnormalities should be addressed by your veterinarian as soon as possible. Dyspnea is difficulty breathing and is a generalized term. It can be a result of a respiratory infection, trauma, allergies, a foreign body in the airways, and numerous other things. If your pet is having difficulty breathing, please see your vet right away.

I am sorry to hear about your dog. This lesion could be an insect bite, an area of bacterial or fungal infection, or growth. Without seeing it in person it is difficult to distinguish between these. The coughing is much more concerning and I would recommend having her examined as soon as possible if she is having ongoing coughing and difficulty breathing. Some conditions, such as heart disease, can cause coughing that is worse at night when the pet is laying down, so I would want to examine her, listen to her heart and lungs, and take an x-ray of her chest to determine just why she is coughing. Heart disease is not common in a 9 month old dog, but we would also want to check for things like congenital diaphragmatic hernias which could cause problems when she is laying down, or infections of the respiratory tract.

This could be due to dust, or strong scents in the environment. I would first check to see if that's a possibility. Things like sand storms, construction, perfumes and smoke can irritate the nasal passages and cause them to sneeze like this. An infection is also possible. Sometimes they can get a mild infection similar to a cold. These infections have the possibility to go away on their own, or can get worse with time. The scratching is suspicious of an allergy, but could also be due to other things like fleas or mites. A vet would need to exam Margo in order to determine this. If Margo starts having nasal discharge, loses energy, or otherwise seems worse, then I'd recommend taking her to a vet. I hope that helps and Margo gets better soon.

Shortness of breath is very concerning for fluid building up in the lungs (which can be due to several causes including heart disease and cancer). A primary lung disease, a tumor in the chest, lung parasites or a problem with the diaphragm. Dogs don't really get asthma like humans do. They can get a bronchitis but this generally presents as coughing and wheezing. It's best to play it safe. The veterinarian will need to listen to the heart and lungs, conduct a physical exam and may need some radiographs.
