Older dog is coughing after new puppy. Is it kennel cough or a cold?

In a young dog like him, something like kennel cough needs to be considered. I recommend that you have Kingsley evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Likely diagnostics to be performed include thoracic radiographs and bloodwork. Treatment would be dependent on findings. Either one is possible with a hacking cough - kennel cough would be most common in a dog his age, but allergies can certainly cause a cough as well. You may want to check in with your vet tomorrow since they just performed a physical exam and make sure there is no additional testing they would want to perform (such as a chest x-ray) with this new information. Kennel cough is often self limiting and no specific treatment is necessary since it is often viral, however your vet might want to prescribe some medications to help with the symptoms. An allergic cough is sometimes treated with cough suppressants or anti-inflammatory medication.

Kennel Cough is easily spread from dog to dog. Given the pup's age, it should be examined by your veterinarian to confirm the diagnosis. Left untreated, kennel cough can progress to pneumonia which can be life threatening in puppies.

Although there are many causes of coughing (heart disease, collapsing trachea, pneumonia, etc.), the most likely cause for the coughing given Emmie's history is 'Kennel Cough' or Infectious tracheitis. This is a viral infection that causes irritation in the trachea and a cough. It can become very severe such that the coughing prevents eating/sleeping and leads to weight loss and depression. If the coughing is severe you can ask your vet about anti-tussives (anti-cough medication). Sometimes this infection leads to a secondary bacterial infection, and the cough becomes 'wet' and at this stage antiboitics are required. I recommend a visit to your vet, x-rays might be required depending on how the lungs sound when your vet listens to the chest. Best of luck with Emmie.

Kennel cough, or Bordetella, is a common upper respiratory pathogen that is very contagious between dogs, and usually dogs have a loud goose-honk cough, sometimes ending in coughing up a bit of phlegm. This could be going on with your dogs. Don't worry, it isn't life-threatening, but I usually put these dogs on an antitussive to help alleviate the cough and sometimes an antibiotic. If you don't take them to a vet, the cough should go away in a week or two, but make sure you don't let them socialize with other dogs as they will spread it around.

Congrats on your new puppy, but I'm sorry Kasha isn't doing well! Typically you would see coughing all the time with kennel cough, and an increase of the coughing after exercise. It certainly could be a heart problem if this coughing only occurs after running and he tires easily, but there is a chance it could be a mild case of kennel cough or a respiratory infection. Until you can get him into the vet, rest him as much as possible. Don't let him run around, keep him quiet, and make sure he keeps eating and drinking. If he appears congested, you can try putting him in a room with a humidifier or taking him into the bathroom with you when you take a shower. The steam may help with any congestion. Best of luck.

The most likely diagnosis is kennel cough; they can contract this even if they have been vaccinated for it. I suggest you get him to your vet for an exam (not an emergency). Kennel cough can progress into a pneumonia especially in these little guys so you should start treatment before it gets worse. Hope this helps. Best wishes.
