Why are my dogs coughing, congested, and acting like they're choking?

This sounds like he may have an upper respiratory condition. This could be something as common as kennel cough, especially if you take Bakster to dog parks or if he has contact with other dogs. Usually, kennel cough is self-limiting, ie goes away within 3-4 weeks without treatment. It is caused by a number of different virusesw and bacteria, the most well-known being Bordetella bronchiseptica. Treatment is only necessary if the coughing get s excessive, and/or Bakster gets a fever or otherwise appears ill. You should take Bakster to a vet for an exam if he shows any signs of breathing problems, lethargy, not eating and/or drinking. Treatment for upper respiratory disease consists of cough medicine and antibiotics if indicated.

I don’t think this sounds like parvovirus. It actually sounds like your dogs could have canine infectious respiratory disease syndrome or kennel cough. If it is primarily coughing and clear nasal discharge that you are seeing there may not be any treatment necessary. I’d the nasal discharge is yellow or green and opaque or if the dogs have a decrease in appetite or trouble breathing you should see your vet.

It is sometimes due to bacterial or viral infections. This is a relatively common disease in puppies especially if not vaccinated. It is contagious and usually dogs get it from other affected dogs. Coughing can of course happen due to other pulmonary conditions like pneumonia for example. I recommend that you have Naja evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. From the description of the cough for Marshall it sounds like kennel cough. Kennel cough can sound like a honking cough or a hacking noise and can occur at any random time but more frequently when excited or with exercise. Other reasons for cough with Marshall can be: parasite infection allergies pneumonia (much less likely) inhaled foreign body (much less likely) I would recommend to keep him away from other dogs while he is coughing in case he has kennel cough and is contagious. If his cough persists and/or worsens, stops eating, or acts lethargic, please schedule an appointment with his veterinarian so they can examine him and determine the cause of his cough.

Considering your description I would consider the cough as the primary sign, whereas the vomiting episodes could be secondary to intense inflammation of the trachea and potentially bronchi. This kind of cough could be due to infective causes (like kennel cough syndrome), which is usually self limiting and does not require treatment (maybe that is the case of Buddy, the older one) unless systemic signs are present. Having said that, considering that there are systemic signs of lethargy I would recommend a check up as antibiotics may be needed.
