Why is my dog still coughing with green boogers after kennel cough?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! If Daxter has green discharge I would be worried there is an infection. I recommend taking him to the vet that saw him for a recheck. They may need to prescribe different medications or do testing, like radiographs. Because he is young he has a weaker immune system so he may need extra help getting better. Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Precious! There are many reasons for coughing: kennel cough, allergies, pneumonia, heart failure or cancer. Since it has only been a few days it is ok to give her more time. Kennel cough takes 2 weeks to resolve. If the cough worsens or hasn’t resolved in 2 weeks then I recommend a recheck and chest X-rays. I wish you the best!

I'm sorry Hennessey is so sick. There are many potential pathogens or problems that could cause chronic discharge and cough. Be sure that you have been giving medications or treatments as directed, and do not stop any antibiotic therapy early as this could cause resistance. But If she is not responsive to current therapies, further diagnostic testing may be necessary. In some cases radiographs of the head and chest may be helpful, or sending out bloodwork or tissue swabs to a lab to try to determine what pathogen's may be causing her illness. In some cases if her primary veterinarian is unable to dart term and the cause of her illness, it may be worth discussing referral to a specialty clinic or veterinary school for an internal medicine consult. Hello. After 3 weeks I would be a little concerned as to why Tristan is not any better. I would not use the Mucinex as this can dry out the secretions & actually make things worse. If your veterinarian has not done chest x-rays, this would be the very next step to see if there is something else going on. In the meantime, I would try doing some steam therapy with him. This may be due to an upper respiratory infection that could be now affecting the lower respiratory system as well such as kennel cough. It is very important that you have Teddy evaluated by a veterinarian as soon as possible for further assessment and treatment. They would be able to gather more information and proceed with an exam to determine what would be best at this point. They are likely going to consider prescribing antibiotics. It’s possible that he’s got rhinitis, which can be caused by an allergic type reaction, an infection, or even an auto-immune type condition where the nasal passages become inflamed for no reason. A foreign body (such as a grass seed) would also be possible, as would a nasal tumor. A rhinoscopy (scope of the nose) and biopsy may be needed for a diagnosis and to determine the best treatments. I'm so sorry Ollie is having this problem. It sounds like Ollie needs to go back for a recheck examination and possibly some x-rays of his lungs. Sometimes kennel cough can progress into pneumonia and will need different treatment, so I would recommend having your veterinarian evaluate him again. In the meantime, you can take him into the bathroom with you when you shower for 5-10 minutes because the humidity should help loosen things in his lungs and make him feel a little bettter.
