Dog in labor all day, water broke, no puppies. Is it an emergency?

Hello. After 5 hours, it is time to see your veterinarian for an x-ray or ultrasound to see if & how many puppies remain in her. You vet may elect to just watch for another 24 hours, especially if Angel seems content with her newborn, & there are no distressed fetal heartbeats. Otherwise, it might be time to intervene, first with trying Oxytocin to initiate uterine contractions , or take her immediately to surgery. If it's been six hours since the last puppy was born and you believe Ahavala still has at least one more pup inside her, this is an emergency - she needs to be seen at an emergency clinic tonight for further evaluation (a physical exam, and likely x-rays and/or ultrasound) to determine if there is in fact another pup present. If so, she will almost certainly need an emergency c-section to remove it. here should generally be no more than two hours at most between puppies once a mother dog has started delivering, so a delay of this long is not normal and requires veterinary intervention.

Been in labour for 2 days is a very long time and could cause serious damage to both puppies and Londie. I would strongly recommend to have her checked by your vet. I am sorry to hear about your concern for Tara. I would recommend bringing her in to your vet for examination. If your vet has an ultrasound machine they can use it to check the puppies and ensure they are doing ok/ are not in distress. What concerns me is it sounded like she was going into labor a few days ago, and normally dogs labor will progress and not stop. I would be concerned she is not going through a normal labor, and if she seems lethargic today that is even more concerning. I would get her in to ensure her safety and that of her puppies. I typically recommend heading to the vet if it has been more than four hours between puppies. While it can be perfectly normal to take long breaks in between puppies it’s best to have a vet check for signs of fetal distress if it has been more than four hours, especially since one puppy was already still born. If you suspect there are more puppies that have not been born yet it is best to seek emergency care ASAP, especially if she has gone several hours without producing another puppy. Your vet may be able to examine or X-ray her to see if any more puppies are in the birth canal. Most small breed dogs typically only have 1-2 puppies in a litter normally, but there can be exceptions and if she seems in distress or you suspect a stuck puppy, seeking care ASAP is needed.

Hi there. In large breed dogs like your Newfie that commonly can birth their own offspring without c section-when they are having a hard time it is due to one of two things: they are overtired from a very large litter (or it is their first time and they are very stressed), or potentially a puppy is stuck in the birth canal with a breech or sideways appearance. If she will allow you, see if you can lift her tail and see a puppy or any placenta protruding from her vulva. If no, and you are a very experienced breeder, she may allow you to feel for a puppy stuck in the birth canal. If you can feel one, she may allow you to manipulate the puppy into a more deliverable presentation. If she will not and continues to push without producing puppies, it is time to call your vet and take her in or risk losing the rest of your litter. if she cannot pass the puppy she will tire herself quickly and stop pushing altogether. Do not allow her a long period of time before you take her in-if she has been pushing for a while (more than 20mins) and you cannot readjust-time to go in immediately.
